ALBANY- Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley), today announced that the State Senate has passed his legislation, the Counterfeit Airbag Prevention Act (S. 5037-B), to protect unsuspecting consumers from the installation of potentially fatal counterfeit airbags.
Since 2010, when U.S. customs intercepted over 300 counterfeit airbags manufactured at Guangzhou Global Auto parts, and bearing the logos of Honda, BMW, Lexus, and Audi, the US has become aware of a growing proliferation of counterfeit automobile parts.
Bills Offer Relief to Businesses, Homeowners, Local Governments, and School Districts; Increase Disaster Preparedness; and Remove Obstacles to Recovery
The New York State Senate today passed a comprehensive legislative package that provides relief to people and communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy, aids rebuilding efforts, and increases disaster preparedness. The package, made up of over 20 bills, will be integral to providing needed financial assistance to homeowners, businesses, local governments, school districts, and others still recovering from the storm, and give those responsible for disaster response the tools they need to be more effective and efficient.

Building on the momentum of the prior week’s event in Brentwood, the Community Prayer and Peace Rally was formed once again to continue to bring awareness to the issue of gang related violence in our Long Island communities. Senator Zeldin currently sponsors a bill in the Senate (S.5384) taking significant action to curb gang violence.

Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I—Shirley) attended the 10th Anniversary of the Long Island 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, June 8. The walk spans 2 days and covers 35 miles of Suffolk County. Over $400,000 had been raised as of the start of the walk, bringing the total funds raised to assist breast cancer survivors on Long Island to over $5,000,000 since the organization's first walk in 2004. "It is with deep sadness, that we pause to mourn, honor and remember the life of former New York State Senator Caesar Trunzo. He was a man who dedicated his life to public service and, in so doing, profoundly impacted the lives of so many New Yorkers. The Third Senatorial District was very well represented during Senator Trunzo's time in office. He fought hard for individuals, organizations and communities throughout his Senate District. Senator Trunzo also served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.

Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) honored Gail Hoag, who recently retired from her position as Executive Director of the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. At the surprise retirement party on May 23, 2013, Gail was recognized for her 15 years of service to the Patchogue Chamber.
On May 24, 2013, Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) presented Certificates of Recognition to the 27 students and 3 teachers from Eastern Suffolk Boces who recently helped Hagerman Fire Department Firefighter Ralph Lettieri, Jr. Ralph lost his left leg due to a flesh eating disease, just under a year ago. The students volunteered their time to upgrade his house and also donated Christmas toys to the Lettieri family.
Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) recently honored Master Sergeant (MSgt.) Eric Carver of East Patchogue, as his 2013 inductee to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life.
In April 2013, MSgt. Carver completed his 27th year of combined U.S. Air Force service between active duty service and Air National Guard service.
Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) attended the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association’s Armed Forces Day at the corner of Portion Road and Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma on Saturday, May 18th. Senator Zeldin spoke to the gathering regarding the importance of service to our country and honoring those who have served.

On April 9, 1986, Eric Carver enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and completed basic military training at Lackland AFB TX and Air Force specialty training in Aircraft Avionics communications/ navigations specialist at Keesler AFB MS. From there, Carver served at Columbus AFB in Columbus MS and Loring AFB in Limestone ME until Feb 1990.
In September 1990, Carver joined the New York Air National Guard as a member of the 106th RQW (Rescue Wing). He is currently serving and holds the rank of MSgt. (Master Sgt.), and in April 2013, just completed his 27th year of combined US Air Force service between active duty service and Air National Guard service.
Senators Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) and Phil Boyle (R, C, I- Islip) presented a New York Senate Resolution commemorating Rabbi Steven Moss's 40th Anniversary with B'nai Israel Reform Temple in Oakdale. The presentation took place at the Suffolk County Police Memorial Service in Yaphank on Friday, May 17th. Rabbi Moss (center) is in his Suffolk County Police Uniform, where he serves as Chief of Chaplains.

At an award ceremony held in Albany on May 7, 2013, Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) honored Erica Boynton of Brentwood as the 3rd Senate District’s 2013 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction.” Erica was honored for her outstanding work in the prevention of gang violence in Suffolk County. She is also a founder of the Brentwood Association of Concerned Citizens and a leader of the successful anti-graffiti and neighborhood clean-up campaign in Brentwood. The Senate’s Women of Distinction program honors the exceptional achievement, personal excellence and outstanding, courageous and heroic actions on the part of individual women from across the State. In 2010, the State Education Department secured Race to the Top Funding from the U.S. Department of Education. In exchange for $700 Million in funding, the state education department made various commitments related to educational standards, testing, a teacher evaluation system, and data collection.
