Hauppauge, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley), Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, held a press conference today detailing his legislation designed to protect consumers at the pump.

Senator Zeldin to Introduce Legislation to Protect Consumers at the Gas Pump

Albany, NY- Responding to a story in today’s Newsday, Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley), Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, announced he will introduce legislation to protect consumers at the gas pump.

“I am concerned that some gas stations on Long Island are getting away with charging consumers as much as $1 per gallon more for credit card than with cash. Moreover, the deceptive advertising that is happening is outrageous and has to stop,” said Senator Zeldin.

Senator Zeldin and Senate Majority Restore STAR Rebate for Seniors in Budget Resolution

State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I-Shirley) announced today that within this week’s State Senate 2012-2013 Budget Resolution, there will be much needed tax relief for New York’s Senior Citizens.

Senator Michael Ranzenhofer (R, C, I-Amherst) and Senator Zeldin introduced this legislation (S.6286) in January and have been actively advocating on its behalf since. On February 29, 2012, the Senate’s Aging Committee unanimously passed their bill to restore the STAR Rebate Check for seniors.

“The return of the STAR Rebate will give struggling seniors on fixed incomes a little breathing room,” said Senator Zeldin. “The Rebate Check should not have been repealed in 2009 and it is important that we bring it back to provide property tax relief to seniors who need it most.”

Senator Lee Zeldin Announces Passage of his Legislation to Protect the Confidentiality of Sexual Violence Victims

Albany, N.Y. – New York State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) announced the passage of his legislation today to help protect the confidentiality of victims of sexual violence.

The bill (S.4073B), which will allow victims of sexual violence to have their voter records sealed in order to protect them from their attacker, passed the State Senate today with bi-partisan support and will now be delivered to the Assembly for consideration. The bill in the Assembly is being sponsored by Assemblyman Gabryszak (D-Cheektowaga).

“The recent wave of prescription drug abuse has become not only dangerous, but violent and deadly,” said State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley). “The horrific shooting at Haven Drugs in Medford last June was a tragedy that should have never occurred. The legislation we passed in the Senate today is an important step in our efforts to curb this growing epidemic and help insure that what happened in Medford never happens again. These bills, which I was proud to co-sponsor, will place tighter controls on prescription drugs such as Hydrocodone and Tramadol; they will also create new penalties, and increase existing penalties, for those who contribute to the black market sale of these dangerous substances.

Senator Zeldin: Executive Budget Falls Short on Education Funding For Long Island Schools

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., Senator Jack Martins and Senator Lee Zeldin today stated that the recent proposed executive budget which calls for a 4% increase in state aid to education does not provide Long Island schools with their fair share.

In the recently announced executive budget, Nassau and Suffolk Counties receive a disproportionate share of state education aid. Long Island is home to approximately 17 percent of the state’s students. However, out of the over $19.7 billion in state education aid appropriated for school districts statewide under the executive budget, aid to Long Island falls short.

DEC Considers Lowering Minimum Size Limit for Fluke

Ronkonkoma, NY – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) and fishing industry leaders today hailed the announcement by Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials, that New York State may reduce the size limit for fluke for the upcoming recreational fluke fishing season.

The current size limit for fluke caught recreationally in New York State waters is 20.5 inches. The 2012 fluke season may see a reduction in that limit to 19.5 or maybe even 19 inches.

STATE SENATOR LEE ZELDIN JOINS GOVERNOR CUOMO FOR BILL SIGNING OF LAW REPEALING MTA PAYROLL TAX FOR OVER 700K TAXPAYERS

West Hempstead, N.Y. – State Senator Lee M. Zeldn (R, C, I- Shirley) joined his legislative colleagues and Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today as the Governor signed into law a new measure to eliminate the MTA Payroll Tax for approximately 80 percent of all employers currently paying the tax.

Last week, the Legislature passed a bill repealing the MTA Payroll Tax for 78.2 percent of all employers (over 700,000 taxpayers). In addition, thousands more will see a reduction. In addition to the 290,000 employers who will have their tax eliminated, 414,000 self-employed taxpayers will also see the MTA Tax repealed. All elementary and secondary schools, both public and private, will now also be completely exempt from the payroll tax.

Senator Zeldin Secures Repeal in MTA Payroll Tax

“Today is the start of the much anticipated repeal of the MTA Payroll Tax. This is a huge victory for my constituents, the taxpayers of the Third Senate District.

As a result of the agreement between the Legislature and the Governor, 78.2 percent of all employers (over 700,000 taxpayers) will see a total elimination of the tax. Many others will receive a reduction.

I very much appreciate Governor Cuomo’s good faith efforts working with Senate Republicans to remove this unfair burden on Long Island businesses, nonprofits and others.

Zeldin, Murray: State DEC Announces Permit Modifications for L.I. Compost

YAPHANK, NY - In a new development regarding odor and dust complaints in Yaphank, New York State Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) and Assemblyman Dean Murray (R, C- East Patchogue) today announced that the state's Department of Environmental Conservation has informed Long Island Compost of a permit modification for certain operations.

The DEC modification removes the variance allowing the company to operate an un-enclosed transfer station; limits the size of mulch piles at the facility; and prohibits storage of uncured compost. A copy of the DEC's correspondence containing the modifications accompanies this release.

NYS School Boards Assoc. Endorses Sen. Zeldin’s MTA Payroll Tax Repeal Legislation

Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I –Shirley) announced today that the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) has endorsed his MTA Payroll Tax Repeal legislation.

S.5596-A/A.8193-A passed the New York State Senate on June 15, 2011, with a bi-partisan vote, 40-22. The bill was introduced in the Assembly by Assemblyman George Latimer (D-Rye). Twenty-one other Assembly Members have signed on as co-sponsors of this legislation, including Dean Murray (R, C- East Patchogue), Al Graf (R, C- Holbrook), Dan Losquadro (R, C- Shoreham), and Fred Thiele (I- Sag Harbor).

Governor Cuomo Signs Bills To Limit Protests at Military Funerals

Ronkonkoma, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I Shirley) announced today that Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed into law Senator Zeldin’s bill to limit protests at military funerals.

In keeping with his 2010 campaign promises, Senator Zeldin sponsored and delivered passage of a series of bills, one of them named after Specialist Thomas J. Wilwerth, an Iraq War Veteran who lost his life in combat in 2006.

The bills, sponsored by Senators Lee Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley) and Joseph Griffo (R-C, Rome), balance the constitutional right of free speech with the need to protect families mourning the loss of their fallen servicemember.
