DEC Considers Lowering Minimum Size Limit for Fluke

Ronkonkoma, NY – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) and fishing industry leaders today hailed the announcement by Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials, that New York State may reduce the size limit for fluke for the upcoming recreational fluke fishing season.

The current size limit for fluke caught recreationally in New York State waters is 20.5 inches. The 2012 fluke season may see a reduction in that limit to 19.5 or maybe even 19 inches.

Statement from Senator Lee M. Zeldin RE: Governor Cuomo's Budget Proposal to Eliminate the Salt Water Fishing License Fee

"The salt water fishing license fee should have never been passed in the first place. I fought hard immediately upon taking office in January 2011 to secure a three-year moratorium in the 2011-2012 state budget. Long Island's recreational fishing industry benefits as a result of a more friendly culture in Albany. As Governor Cuomo said at a Freeport press event in August of 2011, some things in life should be free and salt water fishing is one of them. This year, I introduced legislation with Assemblyman Fred Thiele to permanently eliminate the salt water fishing license fee.

SENATE PASSES BUDGET BILL TO MAKE SALTWATER FISHING FREE FOREVER

State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley) today announced that the Senate has passed the portion of the State Budget that permanently eliminates the Saltwater Fishing License Fee.

“The elimination of the Saltwater Fishing License Fee was one of many important priorities for me since taking office in 2011,” said Senator Zeldin. “The three year moratorium we secured in the 2011-2012 budget was a big victory for all Long Islanders, but there is no better to build on that success than to permanently eliminate the fee in this year's budget. I am very grateful that Governor Cuomo included the elimination of this fee in his 30 Day Executive Budget Amendment.”

Senator Lee Zeldin Sponsors “Teach a Kid to Fish”

Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I—Shirley) joined with the New York Sportfishing Federation, Recreational Fishing Alliance, New York Fishing Tackle Trade Association and Captree Boatmen's Association today to sponsor  "Teach a Kid to Fish" at Captree State Park. Nearly forty area children participated in the event where they were given a hands-on lesson in fishing basics and safety.  

“Whether for work or play, fishing has long been a cornerstone of Long Island’s culture and economy,” said Senator Zeldin. “By sharing the gift of fishing with the youngest members of our community and inspiring an interest early on, we are ensuring the continuation of that legacy for generations to come.”
