Enhanced School Tax Relief Program (STAR) Application Deadline March 1, 2011

As we move into February, I want to take this take this opportunity to inform you about a very important deadline regarding your STAR property tax exemption savings on your tax bill this year. 

 

If you own your primary residence, turn 65 years of age at any time during 2011 and meet the income requirements, you might be eligible for the Enhanced STAR school tax exemption.  The Enhanced STAR exemption is more than two times the value of the Basic STAR exemption you may already be receiving.

Senator Zeldin and Senate Majority Restore STAR Rebate for Seniors in Budget Resolution

State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I-Shirley) announced today that within this week’s State Senate 2012-2013 Budget Resolution, there will be much needed tax relief for New York’s Senior Citizens.

Senator Michael Ranzenhofer (R, C, I-Amherst) and Senator Zeldin introduced this legislation (S.6286) in January and have been actively advocating on its behalf since. On February 29, 2012, the Senate’s Aging Committee unanimously passed their bill to restore the STAR Rebate Check for seniors.

“The return of the STAR Rebate will give struggling seniors on fixed incomes a little breathing room,” said Senator Zeldin. “The Rebate Check should not have been repealed in 2009 and it is important that we bring it back to provide property tax relief to seniors who need it most.”

Senator Lee Zeldin Votes to Restore the Middle Class STAR Rebate Program

State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) announced Senate approval today of legislation he co-sponsored to restore the Middle Class STAR Rebate check program.

This program was originally designed to give relief to overtaxed property owners. Unfortunately, the property tax rebate was repealed in 2009 under the leadership of the former NYC based Senate Democratic Majority. This is an important program that gives help to homeowners who are struggling to pay local property taxes. With homeowners experiencing difficulty with their finances because of the troubled state of our economy, it is more important than ever to re-instate the STAR Rebate Program.

Senate Republicans Unveil Family Tax Relief Act

Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos and members of the Senate Republican Conference today unveiled the Family Tax Relief Act, a package of tax relief and reform measures designed to provide a major economic boost to New York’s struggling middle class families.

The Senate Republican plan would increase tax breaks that have not kept pace with inflation, and, in some instances, haven’t been adjusted for more than 25 years. The plan also restores the STAR property tax rebate check program to provide real and direct relief to millions of New Yorkers who pay some of the highest property taxes in the country.

Facts on Maintaining Your Basic STAR Exemption

New legislation will require all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive STAR exemptions in 2014 and subsequent years.
