“I am disappointed in the United States Supreme Court for its decision today in Snyder v. Phelps. I further would like to express my deepest sympathies to the family of Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder who lost his life in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This story has defined for our nation the existence of two American heroes, Lance Corporal Snyder and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
For generations as Long Islanders, we have enjoyed our right to fish for free. Two years ago, that right was taken away from us. Fishing is part of our history, and for many its part of the reason why we live here.
We shouldn’t have to pay for something that we have always enjoyed for free. That is why I have introduced S.3638, which repeals the Saltwater Fishing License Fee.
Albany, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) recently met with members of the New York State VFW Legislative Committee in Albany. Senator Zeldin, a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, had the opportunity to discuss issues of top importance to our veterans community. Zeldin, a Senior Vice-Commander of his VFW Post, is currently a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs.
Ronkonkoma, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) recently honored former State Senator Caesar Trunzo at the annual Ronkonkoma Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal Ball. Former Senator Trunzo was appointed to serve as the Grand Marshal for the 2011 Ronkonkoma Saint Patrick’s Day Parade which will take place on March 13, 2011.
Brentwood, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) announced at a Saturday press conference and rally that he will be introducing legislation on Monday to repeal the New York State Saltwater Fishing License fee. The press conference was held at the 2011 annual Suffolk County Boat and Sport Fishing Show amongst a large crowd of fishing enthusiasts. Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I- Sag Harbor) was on hand to announce his partnership as the sponsor of the bill in the State Assembly.

Hauppauge, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) will be holding his first press conference as State Senator on Saturday, February 26 at 1 PM. The event will take place at the 2011 Suffolk County Boat and Sport Fishing Show in Brentwood, NY. Dozens of Long Islanders are expected to attend in support of the repeal of the Saltwater Fishing License fee. This fee was enacted by the New York State Legislature two years ago and has been resented by Long Islanders ever since. Senator Zeldin is expected to announce legislation to repeal it.

Garden City, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) attended a public hearing today on Mandate Relief and the creation of a Real Property Tax Cap. Long Island Senators John Flanagan (R, C, I- East Northport) and Jack Martins (R,C, I-Mineola) hosted this joint committee hearing in Nassau County, NY, and invited Zeldin (above, right) to participate on the panel. This hearing focused on the policies and mechanisms that can be used to accomplish the two goals of Mandate Relief and a Real Property Tax Cap, as well as their impact on taxpayers, local governments, school districts, labor, businesses and jobs.
Albany, NY- Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) met this week with members of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The group was in Albany to discuss a number of issues with Senator Zeldin. Topics ranged from an overview of BOCES services to the state's budget cuts. School districts have been using BOCES programs for shared services with other school districts. Sayville, NY- Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) awarded a New York State Senate Certificate of Recognition to Kiona Bustamante from Sayville High School for winning the statewide Youth Art Contest. Her winning flag design will represent New York State in Washington, DC and at the next National Art Education Association Convention in Seattle, Washington in March.

Albany, NY- Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) today held his first Consumer Protection Committee Meeting. Senator Zeldin (pictured above, center) reported three bills through the Committee today, including S.1833, sponsored by Senator Flanagan which prohibits the sale of salvia divinorum in New York. Also reported out of Committee today was S.2910, sponsored by Senator Zeldin, which amends the telemarketing sales calls statewide registry to include unwanted facsimile transmissions.
