Albany, NY- In keeping with his campaign promises, Army Veteran and State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) today announced the creation of the John P. Jennings Veterans’ Advisory Panel to assist with the creation of legislation to help our Veterans community.
“To further fulfill my campaign promises, I am assembling this advisory panel to assist me in creating important legislation for veterans and their families,” said Zeldin.
Hauppauge, NY- State Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) announced today that he has presented the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to the family of Iraq War Veteran John P. Jennings of Suffolk County.
“John was a man who sacrificed so much of himself in Iraq, experienced the loss of many of his comrades in arms, and suffered injuries that haunted him until the end. He was fiercely loyal and patriotic to his core,” said Senator Zeldin. “I am presenting this medal as a tribute to his service to his country and the great credit his service has brought upon the State of New York.”
“I will be analyzing Governor Cuomo’s Budget Proposal very thoroughly in the coming days and weeks. I will continue to work hard for a balanced budget that does not include any tax increases. For the past two years, Long Islanders and Third Senate District taxpayers have been shortchanged by Albany politicians. I will work hard to make sure that our district's interests and region's interests are not ignored. "
“Today's vote shows that there is bipartisan support for property tax relief in New York State. I am looking forward to working with Local Governments, School Districts and others on a comprehensive package of governmental reforms. We need to move forward on mandate relief to ensure that we reach our goals of both a quality education for our youth and property tax relief for our families. This property tax cap should only be a first step towards progress."
Taxes are the most important issue plaguing the Third Senate District, Long Island and New York State. In the past two years, the New York State Legislature has increased taxes and fees by $14 billion. Raising taxes should be a last resort, not a first option.
Albany, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) met with and welcomed Dr. Nirav Shah, the new Commissioner of Health for New York State. Senator Zeldin joined the rest of the State Senate on Monday January 24, 2011, to unanimously approve his nomination.
“I would like to commend the Governor for speaking out about the need to eliminate the MTA Payroll Tax. I have heard much concern about this tax since its enactment almost two years ago. If in office in 2009, I would have never voted for it and I continue to support its full repeal. The Governor's leadership on this issue would be very welcome for all of my constituents of the Third Senatorial District. I offer my full support if he is willing to take bold action to address this important issue.”
During my campaign, I spoke often of what I would do if I was given the chance to represent us in Albany. Now that I am in office, I have a moral obligation to live up to campaign rhetoric. I believe that my legislative record needs to demonstrate that I remain true to the themes of my campaign: cut taxes, cut spending and create jobs.
This week, in Albany, I took the first concrete steps towards making these commitments a reality. On Wednesday, January 19th, I passed my first piece of legislation in the Senate. That proposal, Senate Bill 1919, calls for a state Constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds “super majority” vote in both the Senate and the Assembly in order to increase any state taxes or fees.
Albany, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) today announced the passage of his first piece of legislation in the New York State Senate, a state Constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds “super majority” vote in both the Senate and the Assembly to increase any state taxes or fees.
“This legislation sets the tone for what we have to do this Session in Albany. New Yorkers have spoken and the message is loud and clear: reduce taxes, reduce spending, create jobs, and reform government,” said Senator Zeldin.
In honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I share the following quote from Dr. King's Lincoln Memorial Address on August 28, 1963:
"Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline."
I am very proud of all your support and proud to be your new State Senator. Let Dr. King's words inspire our efforts each and every day. Our cause may change with time, but Dr. King's words should never be forgotten.
Watch below to view my thoughts about Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State Address. I was impressed with the Governor's message and I look forward to working with him to create a better New York.
