Senator Zeldin Attends Ground Breaking for Tri-Hamlet Gateway Town Square

On August 6, 2013, Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I—Shirley) attended a ground breaking ceremony for the Tri-Hamlet Gateway Town Square hosted by Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning.

The town square will feature a new, beautified landscape design and a statue of William Floyd.

Senator Zeldin said, “The building of the town square will serve to reinforce the historical foundation of the community and is a positive step for the Tri-Hamlet. I congratulate Legislator Browning, Pat Matthews and the William Floyd Community Summit for making this project a reality.”

Senator Lee Zeldin Tours Brookhaven Rail Terminal

On August 5th, 2013, Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I—Shirley) toured the Brookhaven Rail Terminal. Having added two large temporary warehouses and extended rail links, the facility is providing a welcome economic boost to the Long Island economy and job market. The public officials were given the opportunity to see the progress being made at the facility first-hand as Brookhaven Rail Terminal President, Andy Kaufman (not pictured), led the tour.

ZELDIN AND DINOWITZ WORK TOGETHER TO PROTECT CONSUMERS AGAINST COUNTERFEIT AIRBAGS

ALBANY- Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley), and Chairman of the Assembly Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx), today announced that their legislation, the Counterfeit Airbag Prevention Act (S. 5037-B/A.6378-B), was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The law, which goes into effect in November, aims to protect unsuspecting consumers from the installation of potentially fatal counterfeit airbags.

Senator Zeldin's Shed your meds at Operation Medicine Cabinet

Participating in the programs is easy; residents will be able to drive up, drop off their old or unused medications, and drive away. All collected medication will be safely disposed of by officers from the Suffolk County Police Department who will be supervising the program.

Safe disposal helps protect the environment and eliminates the risk of these drugs getting into the hands of small children or those who might misuse them. Improper disposal of medications, such as pouring them down the drain or flushing them down the toilet, can potentially pollute local waterways.

Senator Lee Zeldin Sponsors “Teach a Kid to Fish”

Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I—Shirley) joined with the New York Sportfishing Federation, Recreational Fishing Alliance, New York Fishing Tackle Trade Association and Captree Boatmen's Association today to sponsor  "Teach a Kid to Fish" at Captree State Park. Nearly forty area children participated in the event where they were given a hands-on lesson in fishing basics and safety.  

“Whether for work or play, fishing has long been a cornerstone of Long Island’s culture and economy,” said Senator Zeldin. “By sharing the gift of fishing with the youngest members of our community and inspiring an interest early on, we are ensuring the continuation of that legacy for generations to come.”

SENATOR ZELDIN WISHES THE COMMUNITY A HAPPY 4th OF JULY

This 4th of July, let us each take pause to remember and thank all of those who have sacrificed their lives to protect our great nation and uphold our Constitution. If not for their brave service, the freedoms and liberties that many often take for granted could cease to exist, so to them I am eternally grateful.

Having spent the last week on Army Reserve Duty at Fort Drum, New York, I am reminded of my fellow brothers and sisters in uniform currently serving our great nation from remote locations around the world. I send my thoughts, prayers and sincerest thanks to those sacrificing time away from their family and friends to protect and defend our way of life.

SENATE PASSES THE NEW YORK STATE CRIMINAL STREET GANG ACT

ALBANY— Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R,C,I—Shirley) announced today that the State Senate passed the Criminal Street Gang Act (S. 4444-A) legislation which he sponsored along with Senator Martin Golden to take direct action to prevent criminal gang violence.

This legislation comes on the heels of an awareness campaign driven by community leaders in Brentwood and Central Islip, family members of gang violence victims and State and local officials who sought to unite communities affected by gang violence through prayer and peace rallies over the past weeks.

Statement from Senator Lee M. Zeldin RE: Senate approval of MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast

“Today, I join my colleagues in approving Thomas Prendergast, the Governors nominee to be the Chairman of the MTA.

As a member of the Senate standing Committee on Transportation, I had the opportunity to discuss with the New MTA Chairman my concerns with the way the MTA currently operates, and some suggestions on how to address those concerns including: enacting cost cutting measures, re-negotiating collective bargaining agreements, measuring the fiscal impact of the real estate transfer tax collections, selling off excess real estate holdings, reducing the cash and investment float and lowering the excessive number of managers and supervisors, just to name a few.

ZELDIN BILL TO PROTECT CONSUMERS AGAINST COUNTERFEIT AIRBAGS PASSES SENATE AND ASSEMBLY

ALBANY- Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley), today announced that the State Senate has passed his legislation, the Counterfeit Airbag Prevention Act (S. 5037-B), to protect unsuspecting consumers from the installation of potentially fatal counterfeit airbags.

Since 2010, when U.S. customs intercepted over 300 counterfeit airbags manufactured at Guangzhou Global Auto parts, and bearing the logos of Honda, BMW, Lexus, and Audi, the US has become aware of a growing proliferation of counterfeit automobile parts.

Bills Offer Relief to Businesses, Homeowners, Local Governments, and School Districts; Increase Disaster Preparedness; and Remove Obstacles to Recovery

The New York State Senate today passed a comprehensive legislative package that provides relief to people and communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy, aids rebuilding efforts, and increases disaster preparedness. The package, made up of over 20 bills, will be integral to providing needed financial assistance to homeowners, businesses, local governments, school districts, and others still recovering from the storm, and give those responsible for disaster response the tools they need to be more effective and efficient.
