Capital New York: Bill to expand health coverage for pregnant women approved

Today, Capital New York reported that the Senate and Assembly passed bills that would make pregnancy a qualifying event triggering a special enrollment period for the state health insurance exchange, allowing pregnant women to enroll in a health plan at any time.  The bills, sponsored in the Senate by Senators Seward and Hannon, and in the Assembly by Assembly Member Simotas, was the result of efforts by Sen. Krueger, Assm. Simotas, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, and advocates to close this loophole in the federal Affordable Care Act.

Statement From Sen. Krueger On Assembly Passage Of “Boss Bill”

New York – State Senator Liz Krueger released the following statement today, after the passage in the Assembly of legislation known as the Boss Bill (A.1142-A/S.2709-A), which would ban employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of their personal reproductive health decisions. The bill passed by a vote of 87 to 27, with support from members of both parties, including Assembly Member Jane Corwin (R-Clarence) who spoke in favor of the bill during floor debate. Senator Krueger Welcomes Push By Moms Demand Action

New York – State Senator Liz Krueger today welcomed a new campaign by gun safety advocates Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to reduce injuries and deaths of children across the country resulting from unintentional shootings.  The public education campaign, launched in anticipation of Mothers’ Day and called “Be SMART,” includes the #NotAnAccident Index and interactive map, a tool used for tracking unintentional shootings involving children.  The new campaign comes a week after Republican Senators in the Codes Committee voted down legislation sponsored by Sen.

Senate Environmental Conservation Committee Kills MTS Legislation

New York –  In a 7 to 6 vote, the State Senate Environmental Conservation Committee today killed legislation (S.2556) introduced by Senator Liz Krueger that would ban the construction of any solid waste marine transfer station (MTS) within 800 feet of public housing. The legislation would apply to the proposed East 91st Street MTS site, as well as any other site near NYCHA developments. Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright carries the Assembly version of the bill (A.5903).

Senate Codes Committee Votes Down Gun Safety Legislation

New York – Today the State Senate Codes Committee voted down the Children’s Weapon Accident Prevention Act (S.2491), sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger, along with Senators Avella, Gianaris, Hamilton, Hoylman and Parker.  The bill would have protected children from accidental harm and death by making it a crime to fail to store a firearm safely and securely.

On Friday, amNY reported the story of an Upper East Side resident who went through a nearly two-year ordeal of eviction before regaining her apartment.  Particular praise goes to MFY Legal Services and all those who helped Ms. Morisada through the process of challenging her eviction and subsequent actions by the landlord.

Senator Krueger, Assembly Member O'Donnell Release Letter To Gov. Cuomo Calling For Summit ASAP And Immediate Suspension Of Email Deletion
