Krueger, Kellner: Delta Airline Emergency Underscores Need to Cancel MTS Plans, Reduce Bird Strike Dangers

New York – Yesterday, a bird strike forced a Delta Air Lines flight outbound from John F. Kennedy Airport to return and make an emergency landing. Thankfully, Flight 1063's engine problems following the bird strike did not result in disaster, and the aircraft returned to the airport under its own power. New York State Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) and Assemblyman Micah Kellner (D-Manhattan) released the following statement in response:

“We all know New York City is crowded, and not just its streets and sidewalks. New York City’s sky is crowded, too – and while this bird strike occurred on a flight path out of JFK, it's a reminder that we need to work on mitigating the risks for all our airports. We agree with the Friends of LaGuardia Airport, former FAA officials who think that putting bird-attracting sanitation facilities in major flight paths is a bad idea. The planned North Shore and East 91st Street Marine Transfer Stations will attract more birds to LaGuardia's flight paths and increase the risks.”

Sen. Liz Krueger Calls on Senate GOP to Stop Blocking Law on ‘Ghost’ Campaign Funds

State Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) today called on the State Senate’s Republican majority to allow a floor vote on S. 420, a bill that would require the timely disposition of so-called ‘ghost’ campaign funds amassed by former candidates who no longer hold elected office and are not running for reelection. In 2011, the bill was voted down on a party-line vote in the Senate’s Elections Committee, with Republican senators Thomas O'Mara, Greg Ball, Patrick Gallivan, Michael Nozzolio, and Michael Ranzenhofer voting against the measure.

According to a NYPIRG analysis cited today on YNN’s ‘State of Politics’, there are at least 43 ‘ghost committees’ haunting New York politics with a combined total of more than $11 million in funds. These campaign committees belong to former lawmakers, some of whom are no longer even alive.

Statement From Senator Krueger Urging the Army Corps to Deny Permit For Proposed Marine Transfer Station on East 91st St

For Immediate Release | August 20, 2011

"From the inception, I have expressed serious concern regarding the plan to build a marine transfer station on East 91st St. This proposed location must finally be taken off the table, and I hope that the Army Corps of Engineers will help us do just that by denying the permit needed to expand the dock on which the station must be built.

"My long-standing opposition to a marine transfer station at East 91st Street is based on many factors. Individually, any number of the problems with this location provide enough reason to kill this proposal, but collectively they make this decision a no-brainer.
