Senate Expands EPIC Eligibility

More New York Seniors Now Qualify for this Prescription Drug Program

(Albany, NY)—Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) announced that the New York State Senate passed S.1839 this week.  Senator Krueger co-sponsored this legislation which expands the income eligibility of the EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) program. The bill is currently awaiting action in the Assembly.

Senator Krueger Calls it a Major Victory for Ensuring Public Safety

Albany, NY—New York City won a huge victory for construction and building safety today when the New York State Senate passed a bill creating new guidelines for the re-inspection of all hazardous violations issued by the NYC Department of Buildings (DoB) and civil penalties for hazardous violations.  The bill was sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger whose district was the site of two deadly crane collapses within the last year.

Public school students from P.S. 77 will spend a morning learning about maple syrup's history and production through a variety of interactive workshops. Maple syrup has been a staple of New York's agricultural industry dating back to pre-colonial times. To this day the maple syrup industry in upstate New York provides many jobs and is a significant part of the State's economy.

(New York, NY) – This week the State Legislature passed a Governor's program bill that will help thousands of New Yorkers who have recently lost their jobs due to the national economic downturn.  The legislation provides a 65% discount on continuing COBRA employer health insurance coverage for recently unemployed New Yorkers. The funding is provided entirely through federal stimulus funding, with no cost to the employers or the State.

Senator Krueger Applauds Senate for Passing Voting Reform Legislation Expresses Disappointment in Senate Republicans for Opposition to Ballot Access

New York—Senator Liz Krueger praised the Senate for passing legislation today which would expand democracy by removing barriers to voting.  The bill (S.2810) authorizes the use of titles, initials or abbreviations of names as signatures on absentee ballots.  "Under existing law, ballots are often thrown out because the voter does not sign exactly the way he or she signed their registration," said Senator Krueger.  "This bill will reduce the number of voters who are disenfranchised on technicalities."

Senate Passes Neighborhood Preservation Act Protects Property Values and Neighborhood Safety from Fallout of Foreclosure Crisis

ALBANY, NY- Today Senator Jeff Klein’s bill, the Neighborhood Preservation Act, passed the NYS Senate with 47 members voting for the bill and 11 members voting against it. The legislation creates a standard of safety and habitability for bank owned homes which are foreclosed and vacant. Klein’s legislation will allow municipalities to use their discretion in how they chose to clean up these unsitely residential properties and how they choose to get reimbursed for their work whether by issuing violations or through legal action, or by simply billing the bank.
