Haiti Needs Our Help

Hello Friends,We've all been following the heartbreaking news coming out of Haiti since yesterday's tragic earthquake. I am glad to see that our national government is moving in with assistance, but as New Yorker's many of us have personal relationships with Haiti and with the large Haitian American community in our own great and diverse City.For me, this tragedy reinforces how precious and fragile our lives and safety can be!Nature has taken its course and overnight, an entire country is thrown into turmoil.

State of the State includes ethics reform proposal

Gov. David A. Paterson's second State of the State address included the Executive Chamber's proposed legislation for additional state ethics reform.Named the Reform Albany Act, the plan would create an independent State Government Ethics Commission that would have ten members chosen by legislative leaders.

Governor Paterson Supports Reform Legislation Introduced by Senator Liz Krueger

New York, New York – State Senator Liz Krueger today applauded Governor Paterson for backing ethics and campaign finance legislation she carries. “While the full details of the Governor’s reform package are not yet clear, the Governor's Q&A with the press earlier today indicates that a number of important reform bills I sponsor will part of the package, and I am pleased to have the Governor’s support for these efforts,” said Senator Krueger.

Testimony from Dec. 17 Public Hearing on Budget Reform

On Dec. 17, 2009, the Select Committee on Budget and Tax Reform held a public hearing in Manhattan on improving transparency, forecasting and flexibilty in New York State's budget process. The Select Committee heard oral testimony from eight experts on state budgeting issues and received written testimony from two others.

Select Committee Staff Report on Property Tax Exemptions

Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) released today a comprehensive report by the Senate Select Committee on Budget and Tax Reform on New York State’s property tax exemption system and its impacts on taxpayers.   The report, which is based on oral and written statements from the Select Committee's October 13 roundtable in Albany, explores why the Legislature has struggled with controlling the growth of these exemptions over the past three decades.

Statement from Senator Liz Krueger on Failure of Same-Sex Marriage Bill

“While I was pleased that the Senate finally had the decency to bring same-sex marriage legislation up for a vote today, I am extremely disappointed in the failure of so many of my colleagues to recognize the ability to marry as a basic civil right for all.  At least we now know where every Senator stands on this critical issue and I expect that a number of them will soon be hearing from some very angry constituents for denying them equal rights.
