The last two weeks in Albany have taught me that no matter how dysfunctional I thought this place was, it really was possible for it to get worse.  I assure you that I share your frustration over the current power struggle and the failure of the Democratic majority to act on important issues that matter to the daily lives of New Yorkers.  While things are still in flux, I wanted to give you my perspective on what happened and what it all means.

New York State Senate Honors Betty Cooper Wallerstein at Women of Distinction Ceremony

Ethics Reform Public Hearing in New York City

The Ethics Committee held a public hearing in New York City on Friday, May 29th. Senator Liz Krueger encouraged the public to use the new Senate website as a way to provide feedback and comments on legislation and said transparency is "critical" to fostering ethical behavior. Senator Krueger Discusses Passage of Historic RehabilitationTax Credit Bill

Senator Liz Krueger talked about the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit bill, which will support economic growth and create jobs across the state and was passed uanimously by the Senate. She called the bill a "win-win" for the people of New York.

Senate Expands EPIC Eligibility

More New York Seniors Now Qualify for this Prescription Drug Program

(Albany, NY)—Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) announced that the New York State Senate passed S.1839 this week.  Senator Krueger co-sponsored this legislation which expands the income eligibility of the EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) program. The bill is currently awaiting action in the Assembly.

Testimony from May 21 public hearing on business and banking tax reform

On May 21, 2009, the Select Committee on Budget and Tax Reform held a public hearing in New York City to evaluate the equitability of New York State's business and banking tax structures and their effectiveness to foster economic growth statewide. The Select Committee heard oral testimony from 10 experts and collected written testimony from several other interested parties.

Protesters decry proliferating illegal hotels: Elected officials, housing advocates and labor reps will rally Thursday evening in Hell’s Kitchen

The number of illegal hotels in the city has grown 20% over the past 12 months and a group of elected officials, housing advocates and labor representatives plan to protest the proliferation Thursday at a rally.

The 280 illegal hotels in New York City are not only depleting the supply of affordable housing units, they are siphoning away business from legitimate hotels, said Jackie Del Valle, director of organizing at Housing Conservation Coordinators, a nonprofit that represents low-income tenants.

Dueling gay marriage rallies draw thousands

In an event that generously mixed politics and religion, thousands of opponents of marriage equality for same-sex couples rallied outside of the East Side office of Governor David Paterson on Sun., May 17, calling on the State Senate and God to stop the advance of gay marriage in New York.

“The day will come when the hand of God shall use these people to take him out, out, out,” said the Rev. Miguel Rivera, president of the National Coalition of Latino Ministers, referring to Paterson’s political future.

Senate Passes Legislation to Aid Unemployed as Tens of Thousands Face Loss of Benefits

Albany, NY—Today, State Senator Liz Krueger praised the New York State Senate for passing critical legislation (S.4110-A) which will provide an additional 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits to nearly 120,000 current or soon-to-be unemployed New Yorkers.
