Senator Krueger Calls for Equity in State Budget Cuts

As the legislature began budget hearings today, State Senator Liz Krueger (Vice-Chair of the Senate Finance Committee) called on the legislature to ensure that the final state budget is balanced fairly and equitably with regards to local governments.“I understand that we are facing an extremely difficult budget and there will be large cuts to many programs, but we must make sure that the pain is distributed equitably and appropriately,” said Senator Krueger.  “In the Governor’s proposed 2010-11 executive budget, New York City shoulders a disproportionate amount of pain.”

Bloomberg was in Albany today testifying about the inequities he sees New York City suffering under Gov. Governor Paterson’s Turn on Ethics

After New York’s Legislature passed an ethics package last week, Senator Liz Krueger, a Democrat from Manhattan who voted for the bill, told her colleagues, “We need to not pat ourselves on the back that much because we have further to go.”  Actually, they should not congratulate themselves at all. Gov. David Paterson was right to threaten to veto the bill, and if the Legislature sends it to him, he should do just that. Legislature Approves Ethics Bills, but Few Cheer

Haiti Needs Our Help

Hello Friends,We've all been following the heartbreaking news coming out of Haiti since yesterday's tragic earthquake. I am glad to see that our national government is moving in with assistance, but as New Yorker's many of us have personal relationships with Haiti and with the large Haitian American community in our own great and diverse City.For me, this tragedy reinforces how precious and fragile our lives and safety can be!Nature has taken its course and overnight, an entire country is thrown into turmoil.

State of the State includes ethics reform proposal

Gov. David A. Paterson's second State of the State address included the Executive Chamber's proposed legislation for additional state ethics reform.Named the Reform Albany Act, the plan would create an independent State Government Ethics Commission that would have ten members chosen by legislative leaders.

SENATOR KRUEGER ATTENDS BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS SUBWAY CARAVAN

Brennan / Krueger Bill to Force Correction of Dangerous Construction Violations Signed by Governor Paterson

A bill to improve construction safety sponsored by Assemblymember Jim Brennan and State Senator Liz Krueger was signed into law on July 29th by Governor Paterson. The legislation, developed out of 2005 and 2008 hearings by the Assembly Cities and Codes committees on construction safety, requires contractors and developers to certify correction of violations posing an imminent threat to public safety or face shutdown of their worksites, as well as significant penalties.

East Side Electeds Express Extreme Disappointment over DEC Marine Transfer Station Decision

New York—East Side elected officials joined together in expressing their extreme disappointment over the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) decision to approve permits for a Marine Transfer Station (MTS) at East 91st Street.  In response, the Gracie Point Community Council is investigating the possibility of filing an Article 78 lawsuit with the State Supreme Court in order to block the DEC’s decision.  For years the East Side electeds and the community have actively opposed the siting of an MTS at East 91st Street.
