Cycle With the Senator Saturdays in August

Join State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) every Saturday in August for Cycle with the Senator, a program aimed at promoting exercise and good health.
  
Senator Smith will also be demonstrating the importance of bike safety, wearing a helmet and posing for photos with constituents. He encourages those who snap pix with him to post them to social media, setting an example for others to "move" on the path to good health.

Girl Scout Recognized for Record Sales

(May 10, 2014) - State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) presented a Senate Resolution to Najah Lorde, 13, at her home in Springfield Gardens. She is the top seller of Girl Scout Cookies in New York City this year with 2,833 boxes. Last year she sold 1,111 boxes.

"I love to meet young people like Najah," Smith said. "Even though she is still young, she has shown great leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit, and I am glad that I could recognize her achievements with a resolution passed by the entire State Senate."

ALBANY, NY - May 14 - Senator Malcolm A. Smith honored Ms. Adjoa Gzifa as his 2014 "Woman of Distinction," an award given to outstanding women living and working in New York State whose contributions have enriched the quality of life in their community and beyond.

Adjoa has served Southeast Queens in many capacities and is well known throughout the community as both a strong, well-educated leader and a kind-hearted, generous woman of faith.

Her accomplishments are too numerous to mention here, but they include serving as the chairwoman of Community Board 12 in Jamaica, Queens for five years and as chairwoman of the New York City Employment and Training Coalitions youth committee for four years.

State Senator Malcolm A. Smith Co-Sponsors DREAM Act

Albany, NY) - State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) joined Senator Jose Peralta and his other colleagues in government in co-sponsoring the DREAM Act, which he hopes will finally get passed during this year's legislative session.The DREAM Act creates a path towards citizenship for undocumented students who have entered the U.S. before the age of 16 and have lived here for five consecutive years since their arrival. They must also have graduated from an American high school, obtained a GED or have been admitted to an institution of higher education.

SE Queens Elected Officials Kick Off Senior Appreciation Month

Queens, NY) - State Sen. Malcolm A. Smith joined other Queens elected officials to kick off the 11th Annual Senior Appreciation Month with a breakfast at the Roy Wilkins Recreation Center in Jamaica. The month-long festivities recognize the accomplishments of the seniors. Luncheons, health forums, musical celebrations and bowling are just some of the numerous activities planned from September 9th - 24th. The Queens electeds are all taking part, including Senator James Sanders Jr., City Councilman Leroy Comrie, City Councilman Ruben Wills, Assemblyman Bill Scarborough, Assemblywoman Michele Titus and Congressman Gregory Meeks.

9th Annual Jump & Ball Tournament presented by State Sen. Malcolm Smith and LL Cool J

(Hollis, NY) - State Sen. Malcolm A. Smith announced today that he will be kicking off the 9th Annual Jump and Ball summer tournament next month at the Daniel O'Connell Park in St. Albans, Queens. Participation is FREE and there will also be a DJ and plenty of complimentary food and drink.
The event, a basket ball and double-dutch tournament co-sponsored by hip-hop artist and renowned actor LL Cool J and Taurus Associates, will take place every weekend from Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 through Sunday, Sept 1, 2013.

Smith (D-Hollis) sponsored a breakfast on Saturday at IS 59 in Springfield Gardens to kick off a five-week job readiness program by Our Brother's Guardian, a mentoring organization aimed at preparing youth for a productive future through positive reinforcement, mentoring, vocational training programs and internships. (Albany, NY) -  The State Senate today joined Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis)  in passing his resolution calling on Gov. Cuomo to proclaim June 19, 2013 as Juneteenth Day  in New York State. This year marks the 148th Anniversary of the holiday, which is the oldest-known celebration of the ending of slavery."In recognizing Juneteenth Day, we recognize an important part of our nation's history,"  Smith said. "The end of slavery marked a triumphant moment for African-Americans, who, for the first time, were able to enjoy at least some of the freedoms they had been denied for so long."

Senator Malcolm A. Smith to Appear in "2nd Amendment" Documentary

(Hollis, NY) - State Sen. Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) will appear in a documentary on gun control entitled "2nd Amendment." It is being produced and directed by UK filmmaker James Dann. He interviewed the senator on April 18 at his district office in Hollis. Dann of St. Albans, England was joined by cinematographer Richard Morel of London and production assistant James McEvitt of Flushing, Queens.

 The 45-minute interview covered a myriad of topics related to gun control, gun violence and the Second Amendment. They included the Safe Act, Kendra's Law, the NRA and gang culture.

Senator Smith meets with New York State Nurses Association

(Albany, NY) State Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-Hollis) met with over 25 members of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) to discuss two bills affecting healthcare, both of which the lawmaker supports. The Safe Patient Handling Act (S.1123) would establish a statewide safe patient handling policy for health care facilities in the state, and creates the New York State safe patient handling work group.

(Albany, NY)- State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis), Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Independent Democratic Conference has secured $200,000 in funding for J-CAP, a substance abuse program based in Southeast Queens.
