Cycle With the Senator Saturdays in August

Join State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) every Saturday in August for Cycle with the Senator, a program aimed at promoting exercise and good health.
  
Senator Smith will also be demonstrating the importance of bike safety, wearing a helmet and posing for photos with constituents. He encourages those who snap pix with him to post them to social media, setting an example for others to "move" on the path to good health.

RIP Ruby Dee – 1922-2014

Senator Smith said: "We have lost a true stage and screen legend - Ruby Dee. She was a perfect combination of grace and grit and made huge strides in the entertainment industry at a time when African-American women were given little space in movies and on stage. Ruby was one of the greatest thespians of our time and she leaves behind a stellar body of work that will surely serve to inspire future generations."

Remembering Dora Young - Street Renaming

Dora Young was  the 29th Assembly District Leader and Executive Co-Leader of the Guy R. Brewer Democratic Club, who as the City Clerk of Queens married over 300,000 couples civil ceremonies at Borough Hall. She was honored with a street renaming - 197th Street at the corner of Linden Blvd. has been renamed Dora H. Young Way. Senator Smith is seen here with Brenda Carr, Dora Young's niece. Blossom Ferguson

Blossom Ferguson is a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Army Reserve and a licensed New York State Registered Nurse and Adult Nurse Practitioner. During her 21 years in the military she has received numerous commendations including Army Achievement Medal (with Oak Leave Clusters), Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Blossom is also active in the community with the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York, National Association of Black Military Women, Women Veterans Alumni York College, and Life Saver with the American Cancer Society, Queens Division.

Girl Scout Recognized for Record Sales

(May 10, 2014) - State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) presented a Senate Resolution to Najah Lorde, 13, at her home in Springfield Gardens. She is the top seller of Girl Scout Cookies in New York City this year with 2,833 boxes. Last year she sold 1,111 boxes.

"I love to meet young people like Najah," Smith said. "Even though she is still young, she has shown great leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit, and I am glad that I could recognize her achievements with a resolution passed by the entire State Senate."

Adjoa Esinam Gzifa

Adjoa Esinam Gzifa, a native New Yorker, is Director of The Workforce Education Center, Division of Adult and Continuing Education, at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City. She is also an adjunct lecturer at York College.

As an educator, Ms. Gzifa is committed to providing quality education for all youth programs under her supervision. A strong advocate in her community, she is actively involved with the Summer Youth Employment Program, which provides summer employment to approximately 1,700 youth. She believes strongly that youth are the future and that they should be given every opportunity to grow and be productive citizens.
