Senator Malcolm A. Smith to Appear in "2nd Amendment" Documentary

(Hollis, NY) - State Sen. Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) will appear in a documentary on gun control entitled "2nd Amendment." It is being produced and directed by UK filmmaker James Dann. He interviewed the senator on April 18 at his district office in Hollis. Dann of St. Albans, England was joined by cinematographer Richard Morel of London and production assistant James McEvitt of Flushing, Queens.

 The 45-minute interview covered a myriad of topics related to gun control, gun violence and the Second Amendment. They included the Safe Act, Kendra's Law, the NRA and gang culture.

Senator Smith meets with New York State Nurses Association

(Albany, NY) State Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-Hollis) met with over 25 members of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) to discuss two bills affecting healthcare, both of which the lawmaker supports. The Safe Patient Handling Act (S.1123) would establish a statewide safe patient handling policy for health care facilities in the state, and creates the New York State safe patient handling work group.

State Sen. Malcolm Smith Secures $200,000 in Funding for Substance Abuse Program (J-CAP)

(Albany, NY)- State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis), Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Independent Democratic Conference has secured $200,000 in funding for J-CAP, a substance abuse program based in Southeast Queens. The money will help facilitate its Veteran's Enhanced Treatment Services program.

Sandy Aid Town Hall 3-27-13

Special thanks to everyone who attended my Sandy town hall last night including City Councilman Donovan Richards, Martha Taylor-Butler from Assemblywoman Michelle Titus' office and representatives from City Councilman Leroy Comrie's office and Senator James Sanders' office. It was a very productive meeting, which included presenations from the city about the recovery effort. I will continue to hold these meetings as the clean up process continues and try to help as many people as I can.

(Albany, NY) - State Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-Hollis), Chairman of the Independent Democratic Conference and Co-Chairman of the Hurricane Sandy Task Force, today secured a provision in the budget which calls on the New York State Energy Research And Development Authority to conduct a study and develop recommendations for the establishment of strong utility "microgrids" in New York.

IDC and TV Star Padma Lakshmi Kick-off Teen Health Awareness Campaign in Albany

Albany, NY -- At the State Capitol on Wednesday, Padma Lakshmi, host of Bravo TV’s Top Chef and co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, joined Senate Majority Coalition Leader Jeffrey D. Klein and members of the Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference to kick-off a Teen Health Awareness Campaign.  The campaign focuses on reducing adolescent obesity, educating students about the health consequences of short and long-term alcohol and substance abuse, and raising awareness among young women and health professionals about endometriosis, an often undiagnosed but debilitating disease.  March is Endometriosis month.  At the press conference, Senator Klein was joined by seventh graders from JHS 141, a middle school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

(Albany, NY)-Senator Malcolm A. Smith and Assemblyman Bill Scarborough (D-Jamaica) met with Carter Strickland, Commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection and Joe Martens, Commissioner of the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation to discuss possible remedies for the persistent flooding problem plaguing southeast Queens. Senator Malcolm A. Smith Holds Hearing on Summer Youth Employment

(Albany, NY)-Senator Malcolm A. Smith, the chairman of the New York State Senate Committee on Social Services, sponsored a public hearing on the Future of Youth Development / Delinquency Prevention (YDDP) and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Also overseeing the meeting were Sen. James Sanders Jr. and Sen. Jack Martins.

Testimony was given by several city and state representatives who cited the importance of the programs touting how they give youngsters a sense of responsibility, purpose and pride. They also voiced concerns that increasing the minimum wage, as proposed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, would reduce the availability of space for potential participants.

Operation Safe Southeast Queens meeting 3-6-13

(3-6-13)  I held a very successful forum on crime prevention. It's part of a series called Operation Safe Southeast Queens and it is held the first Wednesday of every month at my district office in Hollis. We had a full house. About 50 people attended. I look forward to seeing more of you next month. Among those speaking at the meeting were Deputy Insector Charles McEvoy of the 103rd Precinct and Sgt. Joann Gonzalez of the 113th Precinct Community Affairs Unit.
