Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman John Sampson and Ranking Member George Maziarz announced today the confirmation of Jonathan Lippman, Governor Paterson’s nominee for Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. Judge Lippman is now the highest judicial officer in the State of New York, succeeding former Chief Judge Judith Kaye.

Hearing And Confirmation Vote Wednesday For Jonathan Lippman, Nominee For Chief Judge Of The Court Of Appeals

State Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman John Sampson (D-Brooklyn) and members of his committee will meet Wednesday morning to take up Governor Paterson’s nomination of Judge Jonathan Lippman to the position of Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court. 

Following the meeting of the Judiciary Committee, Judge Lippman’s nomination will move to the floor of the Senate for a full confirmation vote.

Rules Reform Committee Holds 2nd Hearing In Albany

Today the bi-partisan Senate Rules and Administration Reform Committee held the second of four public hearings, at which they heard testimony from reform advocates and citizens for how the State Senate can improve the legislative process and become a transparent and accountable body. These hearings are key to the new Majority’s effort to open up the legislative process, and increase public awareness and input.

Senate Honors Heroic Actions Of Pilot And Crew Of "Miracle" Flight 1549; Passenger Stuart Wallace To Accept Resolution

Today, the State Senate will adopt a resolution honoring Pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger III and the crew of US Airways Flight 1549 for the heroic actions and breathtaking skill they exhibited after engine failure forced a water landing in the Hudson River, just moments after taking off from Laguardia Airport. Due to their efforts, more than 150 passengers survived.

Passenger Stuart Wallace will be present to accept the resolution.

Immediately following passage, there will be a media availability in Room 328 of the Capitol.

“Last night the Senate Majority Leader reiterated his support for gay marriage when he spoke at the HRC Dinner.

Senator Smith said that at the present time he does not believe there are sufficient votes in the Senate to pass the marriage equality bill which passed the Assembly last year. He asked for those attending the dinner to help him secure the additional votes needed for passage.
