Wallenda says this will be a dream come true

Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed into law legislation (A.8206-a/S.4844-a) that would allow Nik Wallenda to perform a high wire walk between the United States and Canada over Niagara Falls. The measure was approved by the State Legislature in June 2011 and, according to the law, Wallenda will have one year from today to perform the walk. The remaining hurdle is for Wallenda to obtain approvals from Canadian officials.

The Flying Wallenda who wants to cheat death with a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls will get his wish, at least with the blessing of New York state.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation today permitting Nik Wallenda’s bid to walk 1,800 feet across the falls on a two-inch wide steel cable.

Officials on the Canadian side of the falls have yet to signal their final word on the matter.

The Aquarium of Niagara wowed visitors when it opened nearly a half-century ago. But many believe it is, as one lawmaker put it, a gem in need of repolishing.

Aquarium officials are beginning the first steps of that process, and the state has pitched in to help. USA Niagara Development Corp. agreed last month to fund a $66,000 study that will document the deficiencies of the entire 32,000-square-foot complex - which officials say is a much-needed step.

"Just like a home or apartment, you need some upgrades," said Development Director Gay B. Molnar. "What the study will show us is what are our strengths, what are our weaknesses and what do we need to do to enhance [our offerings] here."

Senator Grisanti speaks in favor of legalizing mixed martial arts in New York State

Senator Grisanti-(R,I-60) is the co-sponsor of S.2755 which would allow professional Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) events to be held within New York State. On Wednesday, Senator Grisanti voted yes, and the bill passed the Senate by a margin of 47 to 15.

MMA is legal in 47 states and has a huge following based on attendance and pay per view sales alone.

The success of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), the premier MMA League, has brought economic benefits to cities around the country and the globe.

An exhibition in Toronto last spring set a record of $11 million in ticket sales alone with over 50,000 tickets sold. The total impact from weigh-in on Friday until the end of events on Sunday was $35 million.

The Parkside Summer Arts Camp is accepting registrations for children ages 5-11. Two sessions are offered, July 8 – 26 and July 29 – August 16. The program runs from 9am – 3pm Monday through Friday at St Mary’s School For the Deaf, 2253 Main Street in Buffalo. New this year, the Camp will offer early drop off and late pick up options for those parents that need to be at work by 9am.

The cost of attending one three week session is $100 per child if the child qualifies for free/reduced school lunch or $225 per child for all other children.

Grisanti's Bill Designates Pedestrian Bridge 'Scajaquada 9/11 Memorial Bridge'

Senator Mark Grisanti (R, I-60) announced passage of bill that amends the highway law to designate the bridge that crosses over Route 198 into Delaware Park that connects Nottingham Terrace with Hoyt Lake in the City of Buffalo as "Scajaquada 9/11 Memorial Bridge." The renaming of the bridge - approved with the passage of Senate Bill 1599 - culminated the efforts of local community activists who have been working on this project for over two years as part of their ongoing efforts to have a memorial in the city that honors people who were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
