New York State May Owe YOU Money!

Dear Friend,

You may be entitled to some of the over $10.5 billion in unclaimed funds in New York State.

For your protection, banks, insurance companies, utilities, investment companies and many other businesses are required by State law to surrender inactive accounts to the State. These accounts are known as "lost," "abandoned" or "unclaimed" funds.

BUFFALO NEWS: Concerns aired over prescription drug crisis

Doctors, pharmacists, regulators, lawmakers and parents who lost children to prescription drug addictions all agreed Monday that the state needs to take steps this year to address what is becoming a growing epidemic.

What those solutions could entail is still a ways off, as was made clear in a round-table discussion at the State Capitol hosted by Senate Republicans.

Still, several families involved in the effort left Albany confident.

“I am very encouraged by what I’m seeing here today,” testified Avi Israel, whose son Michael, addicted to prescription drugs, killed himself in his Buffalo home last year.

NIAGARA GAZETTE: Wallenda Gets His Walk

The Niagara Parks Commission will allow tightrope walker Nik Wallenda to walk a wire across the Niagara gorge – a 180-degree turn from its established policy.

Commissioners voted Wednesday to allow the stunt during their Wednesday morning meeting.

It’s an about face for the provincial agency responsible for managing the public property along the Niagara River. It goes against a decades-old policy banning stunters from Niagara Falls.

The parks commission has decided to allow one “qualified stutner” every 20 years.

“It’s a new day,” Niagara Parks Commission chairwoman Janice Thomoson said.

The commission will give Wallenda 45 days to negotiate the arrangements for the walk.

Senator Grisanti Sponsors Bill to Prevent Blackouts on Cable TV

Senator Mark Grisanti is co-sponsoring legislation to amend the public service law in relation to requiring negotiation of fair terms between cable television franchisees and competing independent cable channel.

“In Western New York we are not able to watch Buffalo Sabres hockey games on television if you have Time Warner Cable due to these unfair negotiations,” said Senator Grisanti. “Since terms cannot be reached we want the public service commission to amend the law so that the parties must conduct an arbitration.”

Time Warner Cable has been negotiating with MSG for over a year, but no deal has been reached to bring MSG’s networks and the Sabres game back to Time Warner Cable customers.

Senator Grisanti votes in favor of legislation to ensure child safety

The New York State Senate today passed a series school bus bills that will ensure child safety and enhanced communication.

A bill was passed, sponsored by Senator John Bonacic, that increases the penalties for passing a stopped school bus (S.3099A).  The legislation would impose a sixty day suspension of a driver’s license if convicted of passing a stopped school bus two or more times.

This legislation would make the penalties for passing a stopped school bus multiple times the same as penalties for drivers convicted of speeding in a construction zone two or more times.

Senator Grisanti's Statement on Proposed Redistricting Plans

Throughout the redistricting process, my priority has been to ensure that the communities of Buffalo and Western New York maintain strong representation in Albany. In the past, downstate political insiders with agendas that conflict with the best interests of our communities have been allowed to influence the redistricting process, often resulting in Western New York being left with gerrymandered districts with peculiar boundaries.   Having attended the public comment portion of the redistricting process, I know that many individuals expressed their desire to unite communities of interest in the City of Tonawanda, the West Side of Buffalo and Niagara County. The commission clearly heard those concerns and acted accordingly by reconnecting those communities.

Senator Grisanti’s Statement on Governor Cuomo’s 2012 Budget Plan

"I applaud Governor Cuomo and his team for their work on the 2012 budget. We look forward to passing an on-time and balanced budget to eliminate the state’s deficit while ensuring vital government services are not impacted.   I am also pleased to see that Environmental Protection Funding held level at $134 million, and the commitment the Governor has in Western New York to get our private sector economy rolling again.  In addition, this budget starts the much needed discussion of true mandate relief, including the state takeover of Medicaid growth, which I support.  I do have some questions about how this budget impacts Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the NFTA, two vital services to Western New York.
