MAYOR DE BLASIO AND POLICE COMMISSIONER BRATTON LAUNCH NEW GUN DETECTION TECHNOLOGY

NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William J. Bratton today announced the deployment of new gunshot detection technology that will decrease officer response times to gunshot incidents and enhance community and public safety. NYPD will pilot the ShotSpotter system in five zones of approximately three square miles each located within various precincts in the Bronx and Brooklyn. The first pilot area to go operational on Monday, March 16, 2015 will be in the Bronx.

DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION BEGINS ENFORCING NEW COLLECTION BINS LAW TOMORROW, MARCH 14

New laws allowing the Department of Sanitation to immediately remove illegally placed clothing collection bins on public property take effect tomorrow, March 14. Past regulations required the Department to tag the bin for removal within 30 days which allowed owners to move them from place to place within the grace period.

SECOND JOINT COMMITTEE HEARING EXAMINING POLICE SAFTEY AND PUBLIC PROTECTION

The New York State Senate will hold its second joint committee hearing examining police safety and public protection on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Hearing Room A of the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

The hearing will be convened by four Senate committees – Codes, chaired by Senator Michael Nozzolio (R-C, Fayette); Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections, chaired by Senator Pat Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma); Investigations and Government Operations, chaired by Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset); and Civil Service and Pensions, chaired by Senator Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn).

SENATE PASSES MEASURES TO PREVENT DRUG USE IN NEW YORK COMMUNITIES

The New York State Senate today passed two drug prevention bills to combat the spread of methamphetamine use in New York and to stop parks and playgrounds from being used by drug dealers.

Bill (S1150), sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), would deter the growing use of methamphetamine in New York by strengthening penalties for the sale and possession of meth and make them consistent with penalties for crimes involving heroin and cocaine.

NOTICE OF LANE CLOSURES ON VERRAZANO BRIDGE

Beginning Saturday, March 7 until summer 2017, there will be lane closures on the upper level of the Verrazano Bridge for replacement of the existing roadway. During the first phase, drivers who need to access the BK-bound Belt Parkway ramp from the upper level in the morning must use the left lane of the bridge. Signs will be in place directing drivers to the dedicated lane. During the work, all current lanes of traffic will be maintained during peak weekday morning and afternoon drive times using a movable barrier that can be shifted to allow for three Brooklyn-bound, upper level lanes in the morning and three Staten Island-bound, upper level lanes in the afternoon.

WINTER STORM WARNING ISSUED FOR NEW YORK CITY

Notification issued 3/4/15 at 7:06 AM. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens from 7:00 PM, March 4th to 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 5th. The current forecast calls for 4-8 inches of snow. Visibilities are expected to be approximately one quarter to one half mile at times. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Manhattan and The Bronx from 7:00 PM, March 4th to 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 5th. The current forecast calls for 3-6 inches of snow. Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is announcing his plans to celebrate Women’s History Month at an event scheduled for Thursday, March 12th, at the Norwegian Home, located at 1250-67th Street, beginning at 7 PM.

This year, Senator Golden will be honoring the Women’s Council of Realtors Brooklyn Chapter, the Knights of Columbus Columbiettes Rev. Matthews Council #126, and the Healing Center New York Domestic Violence Counseling Program. Senator Golden will also recognize the women who lead and volunteer at the Norwegian Christian Home, the Guild for Exceptional Children, the Parents Association of PS 277, and the Coalition for Asian American Children.

SENATOR GOLDEN LEADS STATEWIDE EFFORT TO TARGET CYBER TERRORISM

Albany - State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) yesterday joined his colleagues in the New York State Senate in passing four bills he co-sponsored that will crack down on cyber terrorism and its rapidly expanding threat to the state’s security and finances. The legislation would enact tougher penalties for cyber-related crimes, create cyber security programs to identify potential risks and threats, and require the state to perform a comprehensive review of all its cyber security measures every five years.

SENATOR GOLDEN: PENALTIES AGAINST THOSE WHO LEAD POLICE ON A CHASE MUST BE INCREASED

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is announcing legislation that he has introduced, (S. 3508), that would increase the penalties for those found guilty of unlawfully fleeing from a police officer.

Golden, a former New York City Police Officer, is highlighting a police chase that ended in the Bath Beach section of his district yesterday, as the most recent evidence of the need for a change in New York State Law. This past November, an incident in the Marine Park section of Senator Golden’s district, saw 18 year old Natalie Ferber critically injured by a van that was being pursued by police for seven miles. This chase also left two detectives hurt.

METROCARD MOBILE SALES UNIT TO VISIT SENATOR GOLDEN'S DISTRICT OFFICE

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C, 22nd District) is today announcing that the Metropolitan Transit Authority has scheduled the Metro Card Van to visit his Bay Ridge District Office, located at 7408-5th Avenue, on Monday, March 2, 2015 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

The Metro Card Bus will enable the local residents to take care of all their Metro Card business at the Metro Card Bus, whether it's applying for or refilling a Reduced-Fare Metro Card, buying or refilling a regular Metro Card, or asking a MetroCard-related question. Senator Golden assures residents that they will receive prompt and attentive service.

The press conference will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, 12:00 P.M. at the Brooklyn entrance of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, located at the intersection of 92nd Street & Gatling Place in Bay Ridge.

Golden, Brook-Krasny & Malliotakis are renewing their call for a permanent discount for drivers who travel over the bridge more than 3 times monthly.
