GOLDEN: HURRICANE SANDY TOWN HALL MEETING SEPTEMBER 25, 2013, 7:00 PM

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) will host a community meeting for the residents affected by Hurricane Sandy in the Gerritsen Beach, Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach areas on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at Public School 227, located at 2529 Gerritsen Avenue.

 

Senator Golden will welcome officials from Build It Back, National Flood Insurance Program, Small Business Administration, The Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Financial Services, The Army Corps of Engineers, The New York City Department of Buildings, The Health Department, City of New York, The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, and The New York City Department of Transportation.

AUDITIONS SET: DO YOU WANT TO BE BROOKLYN’S NEXT SENIOR IDOL?

Brooklyn – State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), is announcing plans for Brooklyn’s 7th Annual Senior Idol, a contest that showcases the talent of the senior citizens of Kings County, hoping to be named “Brooklyn’s Senior Idol” this October.

 

Brooklyn residents age 50 or older are invited to audition on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road (handicapped accessibility available at 71st Street door). Senior citizens trying out for this singing competition should bring a CD or cassette tape accompaniment.

SENATOR GOLDEN, WRITING TO THE NYS DOT, SUPPORTS MTA AMENDMENT TO ADD $5.67 BILLION TO SUPERSTORM SANDY RELATED PROJECTS

 

 

Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Martin J. Golden this week wrote to Joan M. McDonald, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, expressing his support for a proposed amendment to the 2010-2014 Capital Program to the MTA Capital Review Board. This major, proposed amendment:

 

· Adds $5.674 billion to the 2010-2014 Capital Program for mitigation projects identified in response to Superstorm Sandy;

· Includes $1.6 billion in project-level adjustments in accordance with the full funding plan approved by the CPRB in March 2012, and

· Rebalances the budgets of various project classifications to reflect the current priorities and allow projects to proceed, including addressing so-called 10 percent issues.

Movie Screening and information regarding free Health Care for First Responders, Applications for Victim’s Compensation Fund will be available.

 

Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) announced today that he will be hosting a screen of “9/11 An American Requiem” Monday, September 9, 2013, 6:00PM at the Cort Club in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. In addition to the movie screening, WTC Health Program will be offering information on free health care for 9/11 volunteers and responders as well as Victim Compensation Fund applications.

NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION OPENS STUDENT REGISTRATION CENTERS ACROSS THE CITY

Annual Registration Effort for New or Re-entering Students Runs August 28 - September 18

The New York City Department of Education has opened nine Student Registration Centers across the five boroughs to enroll new students for the start of school. All new high school students, including those with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), must register at a Student Registration Center in their borough of residence.

50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's history-changing speech

This Wednesday, August 28th, marks the 50th anniversary of the "March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom."

 

That historic day in 1963 is now perhaps best remembered for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, which has taken its place among the most important speeches in our nation's history.

 

Dr. King's "Dream" that his children would "one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" still inspires millions of Americans to this day.

Family Day in McKinley Park & A performance by The Italian Opera Company in Bensonhurst Park this week

 

Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is reminding residents of two free upcoming events for the community. These events will take place this week in Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, and are an opportunity for residents to enjoy the last few days of summer with family and friends in our local community parks.

 

This Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 5pm to 7:30pm is the annual Family Day event in McKinley Park. This event will have music, games, rides, and karaoke for the whole family to enjoy.

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR GOLDEN ON NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL VOTE TO OVERRIDE MAYOR BLOOMBERG’S VETO OF COMMUNITY SAFE ACT

Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Golden (R-C-I), following the New York City Council vote to override Mayor Bloomberg’s veto of The Community Safe Act, issued the following statement:

 

“Today the New York City Council voted to make New York City less safe. These bills will do nothing to further the safety and security of New Yorkers. As a former police officer, I can tell you that instituting these policies will tie the hands of the New York City Police Department, make the job of a Police Officer harder, and make being a successful criminal easier. The blood of the innocent is now on the hands of the City Council members who supported this flawed and misguided piece of legislation.”

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR GOLDEN ON THE EXTENSION OF THE BROOKLYN TO MANHATTAN FERRY SERVICE

Brooklyn, NY – Following reports that ferry service from the Brooklyn Army Terminal to Manhattan is being extended until January, State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I) issued the following statement:

“For years, ferry service has been a top priority for me, and I am happy to report that it looks like the Brooklyn to Manhattan Ferry is now set to run through January. This is not a permanent solution, but a step in the right direction, and will continue to provide an appropriate alternative while the R train remains under construction. I will continue to lobby for a permanent ferry for all of our residents, and I ask all members of the community to help increase ridership by telling their friends, neighbors, and family that the ferry to Manhattan continues!”

SENATOR GOLDEN REMINDS RESIDENTS OF NEW BASIC STAR REQUIREMENTS

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is now requiring all Basic STAR recipients to register with the New York State Department of Finance in addition to NYC application process.

 

Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I) today is reminding homeowners who receives a Basic STAR property tax exemption will need to register with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance to keep getting the STAR exemption in 2014 and beyond. This is part of a new effort to eliminate fraud and protect property taxpayers.

GOLDEN GETS ACTION ON ABANDONED RIDGE BOULEVARD PROPERTY

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is announcing that in response to his complaint made to the New York City Department of Housing and Preservation Development, nine non-emergency Class B violations have been issued to the property at 7701 Ridge Boulevard.

 

The violations cite the accumulation of refuse, rubbish and poorly maintained conditions on the property, as well as violations to repair the waste water line, abate the evidence of a water leak on the ceilings and walls, the need to replace electrical, repair locks on doors, floors and more. Bike Path Maitenance Update

Senator Golden recently met with officials from the Department of Transportation Arterial Maintenance Division, as well as officials with the Parks Department, regarding maintenance issues related to the tree pits, overgrown weeds and grass, along the bike path in and around the Bridges that cross the Belt Parkway.

 

Please know that today, we have been advised that crews were assigned to complete work today from 65th Street to 92nd Street, and it is the plan that a second crew will be dispatch and assigned, to clean up the bike path area from 92nd Street through Bay Parkway.

Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I) is calling on community residents to join him in donating school supplies for local children in need. Partnering with Catholic Charities and Our Lady of Angels Human Service Center, Senator Golden is asking residents to donate backpacks, notebooks, folders, pens, and pencils for those children who are most in need. The supplies will be given out at the 3rd Annual Back to School Event.

Legislators offer health services at district office

 

Senator Martin Golden (R,C,I-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) are teaming up with Heartscan Services to offer free heart and stroke screenings at their district office. A variety of tests aimed at early detection and prevention of health risks will be offered on August 27th, September 5th and September 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 7408 5th Avenue in Brooklyn.

Blood Drive Tomorrow/Street Closures Summer Stroll Friday

On Wednesday, August 14th the 68th Precinct will be hosting a blood drive between the hours of 1pm and 7pm. There will be a blood mobile in front of the precinct located at 333 65th Street. If you can, please try to donate as this really is the gift of life.

Sea Life Story Time at the Brooklyn Public Library

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium and the Brooklyn Public Library have teamed up to host Sea Life Story Time, a series of free events designed to encourage literacy and science learning among children of all ages.

 

Sea Life Story time events will be held at three different Brooklyn Public Library branches on select dates between August 13 and August 16.

 

Tuesday, August 13 at 2 p.m. - Cypress Hills branch, 1197 Sutter Ave. at Crystal St.

Thursday, August 15 at 2 p.m. - Dyker branch, 8202 13th Avenue at 82nd St.

SENATOR GOLDEN STATEMENT ON TIME WARNER CABLE AND CBS CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today has issued the followed statement in regarding to the current negotiations between Time Warner Cable and CBS and is urging a timely resolution:

 

“I am very hopeful that CBS and Time Warner Cable can resolve their retransmission consent dispute soon. However, in the meantime, my constituents and other New Yorkers are being unfairly treated by CBS who has taken the unprecedented step to block TWC broadband subscribers from accessing its programs online.
