Recent Actions by NYS Parole Board Let Dangerous Cop Killers Back on the Streets

In the wake of the decision last week by the New York State Parole Board to release a dangerous cop killer onto the streets, and as they consider the release of yet another cop killer today, Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, Senator Marty Golden and members of the Republican Conference today joined with representatives of police organizations from throughout the state to call for stronger parole laws to keep violent criminals behind bars where they belong.

SENATOR GOLDEN: NEW YORK STATE PAROLE BOARD MAKES WRONG DECISION ON COP KILLER

Albany- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is strongly denouncing a recent 2-1 decision by the New York State State Parole Board to grant parole and release cop-killer Shuaib Raheem.

Shuaib Raheem was a Muslim militant who was involved in a botched armed robbery at John & Al’s Sporting Goods in Williamsburg, in January 1973. The incident resulted in the death of Patrolman Stephen Gilroy and injured Patrolman Frank Carpentier during a 47 hour hostage siege.

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is announcing the 3rd Annual Greater Bay Ridge 4th of July Picnic to be held on Sunday, July 4, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the field at 82nd Street and Shore Road.

The event will feature performances by live bands including: Blues Circus, The Groove, High Tides, Piranha Bros., The Ridge, and Frankie Marra & His Band. The event will also feature rides and sprinklers for the children as well as raffles.

SENATOR GOLDEN NAMES BROOKLYN RESIDENT TO NEW YORK STATE SENATE VETERANS HALL OF FAME

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is announcing that he has named United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Ruben R. Pratts to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. Lance Corporal Pratts was inducted into the Veterans Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in Albany earlier this week.

The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life.

Important Message from Senator Golden - Update from the MTA Regarding R Train Service this Weekend

This is to advise you that there will be no R service in Brooklyn for the upcoming weekend of Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6. This planned track outage will accommodate several subway projects including work on the 86th Street R Station at 4th Avenue.

R service will operate between Whitehall Street, Manhattan and 71 Avenue, Queens.

SENATOR GOLDEN KICKS OFF SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS

Brooklyn - State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) announced the Senate’s 2010 Summer Reading Challenge, which urges young students to “Make A Splash—READ!” This annual program asks students to record a summary of three books in an official Summer Reading Journal.

In partnership with New York Libraries, Sen. Golden encourages students to participate in the summer reading program. Student who successfully complete their journal will be awarded a certificate of achievement from Senator Marty Golden.

Brooklyn - State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today announced plans to host his annual “Support Our Troops” rally on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at John Paul Jones Park located at 101st Street and 4th Avenue.

Senator Golden is inviting residents of the community to join with veterans and family members of active servicemen and women in sending a message of support to our troops both home and overseas. The event will surely have patriotism on display, with a ceremony built around support of our Nation and our military.

Ruben R. Pratts

Pratts was born February 24, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY of Puerto Rican parents. His father, Francisco Rosa Pratts, arrived to New York in 1915 or 1916, while his mother, Juanita Figueroa arrived in 1938. His father served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After his parents met in 1940, they married in 1942 and had four children: three boys and one girl. In the 1950s, Ruben Pratts was a cub scout, until earning his status as a boy scout in the 1960s.

Ralph A. Mottola

Ralph A. Mottola is a highly decorated World Word II Army veteran and former Prisoner of War (POW) who served from 1943 to 1945 with Company H, 141st Infantry Regiment of the 36th Infantry Division. For the past 20 years, he has been selflessly assisting fellow POWs as a federal Veterans Affairs volunteer at the Ex-Prisoner of War Brooklyn “Key” Chapter of the of New York Harbor Healthcare System.
