NYS Drivers’ Licenses Now Carry VETERAN Status

Starting today, residents who are military veterans can apply for a special designation on their New York State driver’s license when they apply for a license renewal.

If you are a qualified U.S. military veteran, who was honorably discharged, and you have a NYS drivers license, learner permit or non-driver photo ID card, you can have the word "Veteran" printed on the upper left hand of your photo document.

This measure, which I proudly supported in the New York State Senate, eliminates the need to carry separate documentation to prove that you are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

Have a Healthy Fall -- Support Your Local Apple Grower!

The autumn season is a great time to take advantage of some of the best things the Empire State has to offer, including fall foliage, football and apple farms.

Did you know that New York is the #2 apple producer in the country?

With 2013 shaping up to be one of the best years yet for New York State’s apple growers, I encourage all New Yorkers (and tourists!) to visit a local apple orchard this autumn.

There are 654 apple orchards around the state offering a variety of apple products, including cider, doughnuts, wine and, of course, apples. To find the nearest u-pick orchard, visit www.nyapplecountry.com/pick.php. It's a great way to support our local farmers.

Funding Vital for Agency’s Mission to Care for New Yorkers with Developmental Disabilities

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the signing of legislation to restore up to $90 million in funding for the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). This law amends the executive budget which called for reducing the agency’s budget by $90 million as a result of a $1.1 billion federal reduction in aid. This funding will allow the agency to continue its vital mission to provide critical care to New Yorkers with developmental disabilities while reversing decades of mismanagement and overpayments that resulted in a decline of services to this vulnerable population.
