Resolution in City Council Calls for Support of State E-Bike Bill

New York City Council Member Rafael Espinal introduced a resolution in the council calling for support of Senator Dilan’s bill to legalize electric-assisted bicycles.S.390, introduced by Senator Dilan and carried by Assemblymember Gantt, would amend the State Vehicle and Traffic law to include electric assisted bicycles in the definition of bicycles and thus permit their use.

Camera Enforcement of B44 Buss Lanes to Begin March 17

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced that camera enforcement of the bus only lanes of the B44 Select Bus Service will beginning Monday, March 17.Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. unauthorized passenger vehicles within dedicated bus lanes on the B44 route will be cited for unauthorized travel in the lanes and fined $115.

2014-15 State Budget: CUNY, DREAM Act

Met with CUNY students this morning to discuss inclusion of the DREAM Act, and increasing funding to the Single Stop Community College Initiative, in the 2014-15 state budget.

Single Stop provides comprehensive social, legal and financial services to students at CUNY's six community College - all free to the student. It is an effective and essential service that more than warrants the $1 million funding increase CUNY students are asking the legislature to consider.

I'll advocate for the additional program funding. And this year—like last year, and the years before—I'll continue to call for inclusion of the DREAM Act in the budget.

Free Basic Income Tax Return Preparation

The office of Senator Martin Malavé Dilan, in conjunction with Long Island University Brooklyn, will be providing free income tax preparation. Internal Revenue Service-certified volunteers will be offering city, state and federal income tax assistance to eligible constituents every Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning February 7, 2014 to April 11, 2014.

Eligibility Requirements:

An annual income of $52,000 or less;
Reside in the 18th Senate District;
Valid photo identification;
W-2 statement, or 1099, any and all supporting documentation including Social Security Card for taxpayer and all dependents.

Dilan Co-Sponsored Fair Play Act Signed Into Law by Governor Cuomo

The New York State Commercial Goods Industry Fair Play Act, co-sponsored by Senator Dilan, was signed into law by Governor Cuomo.The legislation resolves the misclassification of commercial truck drivers, who are often listed a an "independent contractors" even though they are employed by a single commercial goods transportation company.

G Line Review Requested by Sens. Dilan and Squadron Lands Station, Service Improvements

Senator Dilan joined Senator Squadron, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and the Riders Alliance to announce a G train Full Line Review that proposes major improvements to the line.

In January Sens. Dilan and Squadron asked for a review of the line to address a recent uptick in ridership and suggestions for better service. The MTA has proposed a plan that includes increased service during rush hour, service and station upgrades.

Shape-up Bushwick

Senator Dilan and Community Board 4 sponsored this year’s 8th annual, Shape-Up Bushwick.

The event is held each year on Brooklyn Queens Day to promote healthy food choices and exercise in the community. This year’s events included a parade, Yoga, Zumba and aerobic exercise demonstrations.

Poll: Do you support the division of New York into two separate states?

Even before the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, there had been talks of bifurcating New York. From every end of the state from Long Island to Buffalo, through the Civil War, to the 1960’s and again in the 2000’s, it has come up time and time again, in various forms and proposals with support from either side of the aisle. Tomorrow it will again be before the Senate Elections Committee.

S. 4051 would allow individual counties to place an initiative on their ballot to poll their citizens as to whether they support the division of New York into two separate states.

Senator Dilan’s “Right Church, Wrong Pew” Election Bill Among Governor’s Reform Package

Senator Dilan’s “Expanded Right Church, Wrong Pew” bill is among Governor Cuomo’s recently unveiled reforms to reduce corruption and reform New York’s electoral process.

S.420, would require the counting of affidavit ballots cast by voters who appear at a polling place in the wrong election district but within the proper county.

Under existing law, election inspectors are required to offer an affidavit ballot if a voter’s name does not appear on the election district’s rolls. Often, the ballots are not counted because the voters cast them in the wrong polling location.
