National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Yesterday the U.S. House of Representatives resolution (H.Res. 1186) designating April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, passed 410 to 2.The resolution, sponsored by Colorado Rep. Betsy Markey, encourages Americans to consider the lives of others on the road and put an end to distracted driving.

“The safety of drivers traveling between Vermont and New York must be of the utmost importance, that is why I support Governor Paterson’s decision to replace the Crown Point Bridge. Senator Martin Malavé Dilan on New MTA Chairman, CEO, Jay Walder

It is my hope that in naming Jay Walder the next Chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, that the first steps have been taken in returning the authority to fiscal solvency and improved public standing.In my discussions with Mr. Walder, his acumen for managing large-scale public transportation authorities quickly became evident. As Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, I look forward to a successful working relationship with Mr. Walder as he works to restore the public’s trust in the MTA and improve services for riders.

Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit Passes Senate

Legislation will help redevelopment efforts of distressed communities

Today the New York State Senate passed legislation strengthening a 2006 community redevelopment program.

The Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit (HRTC), S2960-B, sponsored by Senator Valesky, augments the existing state program to bring New York State in line with 30 other states with successful programs. The changes will allow the state to target reinvestment to distressed communities, as determined by the U.S. Census.

I am elated to hear Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor has a well-deserved reputation as an intuitive, inspiring and just jurist. She has risen from her humble roots in the Bronx, to become a well-known, respected facet of the United States Court of Appeals these last ten years. I look forward to her continued service and success upon confirmation as the first Latina in history named to the Supreme Court.
