Senator Dilan Introduces Measure to Make Sabotage of Regulated Rentals a Criminal Act

In response to the recent spate of rent regulated building owners  intentionally destroying units in attempts to drive tenants out,   Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) and Assemblyman Joseph R. Lentol (D-North Brooklyn) have introduced new legislation making the practice a criminal act.

S. 6941 would expand tenant protections by establishing the crime of Sabotage of Rent Regulated Accommodations, a class D felony. Existing tenant protections  prohibit the harassment of rent regulated tenants in an attempt to drive them out. However, the recent rise in intentional destruction of regulated units, and the severity of the damage, are well beyond the scope of current law.

Senator Dilan Announces Passage of 2014 – 2015 State Budget

$138 billion spending plan funds citywide Pre-K, increases to TAP and higher-ed opportunity programs.Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) announced the passage of  a $138 billion budget that includes $300 million for universal Pre Kindergarten programs in New York City, new government reforms and increased funding to social programs.“This year’s budget has made great strides to meet new, and greater demands while continuing to offset the gaps left by previous year’s cuts. I commend Governor Cuomo and my Senate Colleagues for delivering a responsible spending plan that spends smart, invests in our students, and offers some much-needed relief for our working families,” said Senator Dilan.

Community Town Hall on the Summer Shutdown of the G Train

State Senator Dilan will join Senator Squadron, US Rep. Maloney, Assemblyman Lentol, Councilmember Levin, Borough President Adams and CB1  for a community town hall on the summer shutdown of the G Train on Thursday, April 3, 6 p.m. On July 26, through September 1, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will suspend G Train service between Long Island City and Nassau Avenue to make Superstorm Sandy-related repairs. Although, the MTA will provide full shuttle service for G riders, Senator Dilan, local elected and rider advocates want to provide the community a forum to discuss additional measures that may be taken to accommodate riders.

Senator Dilan Announces Passage of Common Sense Gun Laws

Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn) today announced that the New York State Senate has passed the most comprehensive gun control legislation in the country. The NY Safe Act was passed with unanimous support from the Democratic Conference and included multiple pieces of legislation previously sponsored by Democratic Senators.

“Following the recent tragedies in Webster, New York and Newtown, Connecticut, New Yorkers made it clear that the time to enact common-sense gun measures had come. With the passage of this comprehensive legislative package, New York is now the national standard in the continued fight to protect the public from the scourge of gun violence,” said Senator Dilan.

How should I bring a gun to the drop off site?

Guns must be placed in a plastic or paper bag or box.

Can I transport a gun in my car?

Yes. If transporting the gun by car, the gun must be transported in the trunk of the car.

When do I get the cash card?

After the gun is screened by officers and determined to be operable, you will be issued a cash card.

Can I surrendeer a rifle or shotgun?

Yes, rifles and shotguns will be accepted. However, the payout for rifles and shotguns is only $20.

Legislation permits optometrists to certify vision related disabilities

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law a bill authored by State Senator Martin Malave Dilan (D-Bushwick).  The legislation, S.1340A, permits licensed optometrists to certify a vision related disability for the purposes of receiving a handicap license plate from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Senator Dilan Praises Proposed Transit Service Restorations as Part of MTA $29 Million Investment

Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) today praised the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s plan to restore transit services to North Brooklyn that were cut as part of the MTA’s 2009-2010 cost saving actions.“The North Brooklyn communities of Greenpoint and Williamsburg lost some vital transit services as part of the 2010 reductions. Bushwick Community High School to Remain Open

Brooklyn, NY—After weeks of input from the Bushwick community and Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick), the Panel for Educational Policy has indicated it will vote tonight in favor of keeping Bushwick Community High School (BCHS) open.Last year, the school was slated for closure after a New York City Department of Education assessment indicated the school was failing. However, Senator Dilan and many in the community took issue with the assessment and chided education officials for applying a performance rating that did not take into account BCHS’ status as a transfer school.

Senator Dilan Announces Successful Gun Buy Back Event Held in Cypress Hills

 Brooklyn—Yesterday more than 180 guns were taken off the streets as part of an annual gun buy back program in Cypress Hills.

Though successful, this year’s program was overshadowed by the unfortunate death of 22-year NYPD veteran, Peter Figoski.  Officer Figoski was tragically killed in the line of duty earlier in the week when he responded to a robbery in progress. The handgun used in the failed robbery would have amounted to roughly one-third of the $700 in drug money the perpetrators attempted to steal.

Brooklyn—State Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) announced the passage of a new Inner City Youth Employment Program and Tax credit initiative for the State of New York.  The new program, created within the legislation adopted during extraordinary session on December 7th,  sets aside $87 million for inner city youth.  The funding is allocated through programs, training funds, and tax credits to deal with the crisis of inner city youth unemployment.

 Brooklyn—Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) today announced the implementation of “Operation Hang-up” – an initiative created under the leadership of Governor Cuomo to discourage drivers from using their cell phones and other electronic devices while driving this Thanksgiving holiday. 

 “Driving while using a handheld electronic device is not only extremely dangerous, but it is also illegal,” Senator Dilan explained. “And since Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, we will heighten our enforcement of this law to ensure that our friends and family get to their destinations safely.”
