Vigil To Be Held For Girl Who Inspired Tough Drunk Driving Law

NY1 -- A memorial vigil will take place Tuesday for Leandra Rosado, the 11-year-old girl whose death in a drunk driving crash in Manhattan inspired a tough state law.

Tuesday is the second anniversary of the crash on the West Side Highway that killed Leandra.

Shortly after her death, former Governor David Paterson signed Leandra's Law, making it a felony to drive under the influence with a child younger than 15 in the car.

Since the law went into effect, there have been 1,550 arrests in the state, including 150 in the city.

Leandra's Legacy

Senator Dilan is presented an award by the Lewis Henry Morgan Institute for his work with Lenny Rosado on the passage of Leandra's Law in 2009. The law strengthens penalties on those convicted of driving while intoxicated with child passengers.The law is named after 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, Lenny's daughter, who tragically died in 2009 when the car she was riding in crashed. The driver was intoxicated.
