Lawmakers: G Train Riders Deserve Better Service

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two New York State senators called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Sunday to undertake a review of G train service in Brooklyn and Queens.Sens. Daniel Squadron (D-Manhattan) and Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn) said Sunday that despite the booming growth of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn and southwest Queens along the G train line, frequency and rider communication have failed to keep up.

Senator Dilan Announces Passage of Common Sense Gun Laws

Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn) today announced that the New York State Senate has passed the most comprehensive gun control legislation in the country. The NY Safe Act was passed with unanimous support from the Democratic Conference and included multiple pieces of legislation previously sponsored by Democratic Senators.

“Following the recent tragedies in Webster, New York and Newtown, Connecticut, New Yorkers made it clear that the time to enact common-sense gun measures had come. With the passage of this comprehensive legislative package, New York is now the national standard in the continued fight to protect the public from the scourge of gun violence,” said Senator Dilan.

MTA Bus Service Restorations, Enhancements to Begin Sunday

As part of the MTA’s $17.8 million in service improvements announced over the summer, the MTA will begin implementing several restorations and improvements this Sunday, January 6.

Some of the restorations include:

B24 weekend service from Greenpoint to Williamsburg Bridge Plaza via Sunnyside;

B39 service from Williamsburg Bridge Plaza to Lower East Side Delancey/Allen Streets via Williamsburg Bridge;

B48 service south of Atlantic Avenue to Prospect Park station via Franklin Ave/Classon Avenue;

Q24 service west of Broadway Junction to Bushwick Avenue via Broadway.

2011 NHTSA Analysis Shows Traffic Fatalities Down Nearly Two Percent

The U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a new analysis indicating that highway deaths fell to 32,367 in 2011, marking the lowest level since 1949 and a 1.9 percent decrease from the previous year.

The updated 2011 data show the downward trend in recent years represent a 26 percent decline in traffic fatalities overall since 2005.

Unfortunately, the same report cited an 8.7 percent increase in cyclist deaths and pedestrian deaths increasing by 3 percent.

FEMA Disaster Assistance Deadline Extended

The registration deadline for FEMA assistance for residents living in one of the thirteen disaster-declared counties affected by Hurricane Sandy has been extended to January 28, 2013.

Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. Residents in the counties of Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Richmond, Rockland, Westchester, Suffolk, Queens, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster, are eligible.

Federal Grants to Fund More Than 300 Jobs to Aid Hurricane Sandy Recovery Efforts

Governor Cuomo has announced that New York State has received $27.7 million in federal Disaster National Emergency Grant (NEG) funds.

The grant will be used to hire workers to help clean up communities affected by Hurricane Sandy in Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.

Workers who lost their jobs as a direct result of Hurricane Sandy or workers who were unemployed prior to the storm are eligible to apply for temporary positions. The New York State Department of Labor will work with local officials to recruit and hire workers.

NYCHA To Offer Rent Relief Due to Hurricane Sandy Service Interruptions

NYCHA will begin instituting rent adjustments to residents in developments severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Rent credits will be issued for any days of the month in which residents were without essential services (electric, elevators, heat or water) as a result of Hurricane Sandy storm damage.Rent credits will be included in the January 2013 rent bill. NYCHA asks that residents continue to pay their normal rents until the credits are reflected on their rent bill. NYCHA residents will receive additional information in their December rent bill.
