Senator Dilan recently joined Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park to call on City Hall to fulfill its open space commitments made during the 2005 rezoning process.

As areas of Senate District 18, including Bushwick, Cypress Hills and East New York, are being targeted for rezoning, it is important that commitments to develop greenspaces are kept.

Senator Dilan Joins in Effort to Preserve Affordable Housing

Almost daily our friends and neighbors face harassment from unscrupulous landlords; some going as far as deliberately making homes unsafe and unlivable. As sponsor of legislation creating a felony offense for the sabotaging of regulated apartments, and a proud supporter of the Tenant Protection Unit, Senator Dilan joined Allied Communities Against Buy-Outs (ACABO) in Maria Hernandez Park to rally in support of laws that strengthen tenant protections.

Nancy Marte is currently a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Reserves, with numerous commendations. She has lived in Cypress Hills for 20 years, where she is an active member of the community. 

Ms. Marte is committed to her Brooklyn community and to New York State, as demonstrated by her 13 years of selfless and dedicated service to the American Red Cross–Disaster Response Team. The Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund has $5,250,000 available for environmental improvement programs in Greenpoint. They would like to hear from you about how to spend it.

If you have a good idea for improving Greenpoint’s environment, the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) is offering a great opportunity to turn that idea into reality. Attend an upcoming workshop to learn about GCEF grants and network with Greenpointers with similar interests.

New York State Senate honors the achievements of New York State women

Inducts Three Women into Historic Women of Distinction Exhibit

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Senator Dilan and Senate colleagues inducted three women into its annual Women of Distinction exhibit.

This year’s exhibit, which opens March 9 in the Legislative Office Building, includes: the first African-American woman elected to the New York State Legislature Bessie A. Buchanan (1902-1980) of Manhattan; physician and professor Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) of Harlem; and lawyer and suffrage activist Kate Stoneman (1841-1925) of Lakewood and the Albany area.

Senator Dilan's Remark on Local Control of Speed Limits

Support for granting localities the ability to establish speed limits as low as 20 mph has grown well beyond the five boroughs. On the same day Senator Dilan joined Families for Safe Streets to urge support for the City of New York to establish its own limits,  the Senate convened to take up a number of bills before the house, including a bill to allow the Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, to set its own speed limits.

Community Town Hall on the Summer Shutdown of the G Train

State Senator Dilan will join Senator Squadron, US Rep. Maloney, Assemblyman Lentol, Councilmember Levin, Borough President Adams and CB1  for a community town hall on the summer shutdown of the G Train on Thursday, April 3, 6 p.m. On July 26, through September 1, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will suspend G Train service between Long Island City and Nassau Avenue to make Superstorm Sandy-related repairs. Although, the MTA will provide full shuttle service for G riders, Senator Dilan, local elected and rider advocates want to provide the community a forum to discuss additional measures that may be taken to accommodate riders.

Senator Dilan Announces Successful Gun Buy Back Event Held in Cypress Hills

 Brooklyn—Yesterday more than 180 guns were taken off the streets as part of an annual gun buy back program in Cypress Hills.

Though successful, this year’s program was overshadowed by the unfortunate death of 22-year NYPD veteran, Peter Figoski.  Officer Figoski was tragically killed in the line of duty earlier in the week when he responded to a robbery in progress. The handgun used in the failed robbery would have amounted to roughly one-third of the $700 in drug money the perpetrators attempted to steal.

Senator Dilan Announces Passage of Inner City Youth Employment Program

Brooklyn—State Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) announced the passage of a new Inner City Youth Employment Program and Tax credit initiative for the State of New York.  The new program, created within the legislation adopted during extraordinary session on December 7th,  sets aside $87 million for inner city youth.  The funding is allocated through programs, training funds, and tax credits to deal with the crisis of inner city youth unemployment.
