Tax official ready to halt cigarette sales by Indians to non-Indians

During his recent State Senate confirmation process, Thomas Mattox, Governor Cuomo's newly appointed New York State Tax Commissioner, stated that his Department is ready to begin immediate enforcement of the collection of sales taxes on goods sold by Native Americans to non-Indians. Attached below is a copy of the news article stating Commissioner Mattox’s position.

SENATOR NOZZOLIO OPPOSES NEW INDIAN SALES TAX LEGISLATION CONTAINING TAX HIKES AND LEGISLATIVE LOOPHOLES

The newest proposal forced through by Governor Paterson and the New York City Democrat legislators to increase taxes and collect the sales tax on cigarettes sold by Native Americans does little to enhance the State’s ability to collect the tax. It does however, contain tax hikes and several legal loopholes that have the potential to make this proposal very dangerous and a threat to Cayuga and Seneca counties.
