School Year Ends With Closures

The Queens Gazette wrote about Long Island City's final graduation, where Senator Gianaris was honored to deliver the keynote speech.

State Senator Michael Gianaris was the keynote speaker on June 27 at Long Island City High School’s final graduation. The school will be closed and reopened in the fall as a completely new school following the city Department of Education’s aggressive plan to turn around under-performing schools, which Gianaris, an LIC alumni, opposed.

Astoria keeps eye on Greece after election

An article by the Queens Campaigner talks about Astoria's Greek-American residents and their concern for Greece's economic future.

Astoria’s Greek-American elected officials said their constituents remain concerned but hopeful about Greece’s economic future after the nation’s New Democracy Party was elected by a narrow margin on a platform of remaining within the European Union.

 

“Hopefully, they’ll get their act together and start getting things moving in the right direction,” said state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria).

Sen. Michael Gianaris' bill would change New York's restrictive policy that lets students apply sunscreen

New York Daily News wrote about Senator Gianaris' proposed legislation, which would reverse the New York State Department of Eduaction's ban on students bringing sunscreen to school.

State officials are looking to change regulations that give New York school kids a sunburn.

Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) said New York has the same restrictive sunscreen policy that led two Washington state sisters to be hospitalized last week with severe sunburns — and he’s proposed legislation to change it.

Gianaris said his bill would rewrite state Education Department guidelines that prevent students from applying sunscreen unless they have a note from their doctor. Instead, Gianaris’ bill would permit sunscreen application with a note from a parent.

Voter Empowerment Act Introduced

Protect Pedestrians, Drivers At Astoria Intersection

The Queens Gazette wrote an article about malfunctioning lights at a busy intersection in Astoria, which Senator Gianaris has urged the Department of Transportation to fix in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. are working to increase safety at a busy intersection in Astoria. Following the recurring failure of all four traffic lights at the 31st Street and Ditmars Boulevard intersection, the three elected officials sent a letter to the Department of Transportation (DOT) requesting an immediate investigation into the functionality of the lights as well as remediation of all problem areas.

Kril Inducted Into Senate Veterans’ Hall Of Fame

The Queens Gazette posted an article about Senator Gianaris honoring Jerry Kril as this year's Veterans' Hall of Fame inductee.

State Senator Michael Gianaris was on hand to honor Astoria’s Jerry Kril in the state senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame 2012 Celebration on May 22 in Albany. Kril was recognized for his outstanding service to the United States Army, First Infantry Division, and for his dedication to the Astoria community, particularly in the area of veterans’ affairs. Kril received an honorable discharge from the army in 1970.

 

“I congratulate Jerry Kril for his decorated service to the United States Army and his ongoing commitment to helping the lives of his fellow veterans,” Gianaris said.

Long Island City experiences new real estate boom

The New York Daily News wrote about the new upsurge in real estate development taking place in Long Island City.

Long Island City is undergoing another real estate boom, buoyed by a new batch of residential towers, hotels and high-profile property deals.

 

Local real estate experts said they believe the momentum — with an influx of waterfront high rises and almost 20 hotels — is due to the once industrial neighborhood’s soaring reputation and an improved economy.

WINNERS AND LOSERS, MAY 25, 2012

City and State reported that Senator Gianaris' video at this year's LCA show was funny and well received by those in attendance.

Word on the street is the Democratic Senator from Queens got the most laughs at this year’s LCA show, with a bit making fun of the Senate Dems’ failed bid at an independent redistricting process this year. It’s not always easy to make fun of yourself, especially on an issue that wasn’t very funny to Gianaris when the gerrymandered district lines were being passed in the Senate during the Big Ugly. (Who can forget Gianaris telling Republican Sen. Mike Nozzolio to take his map and “shove it?”)

Gianaris seeks to halt feed additive

The Queens Chronicle wrote an article about Senator Gianaris' proposal to ban the chicken feed additive, Roxarsone, which has been linked to several diseases, including cancer.

State Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) announced Monday he has proposed a ban of Roxarsone (3-Nitro) and other drugs containing arsenic in chicken feed.

 

Roxarsone aids in making the appearance of poultry pinker because it causes the chicken’s blood vessels to grow unnaturally larger. The additive has been linked to several diseases, including cancer.

 

“This is a known cancer-causing agent that has no business being in our system,” Gianaris said.

New York Could Add 1 Million Voters in 2013

According to a report by New America Media, new legislation that would modernize New York state's voter registration system could add one million voters to the rolls. Senator Gianaris is the co-sponsor of the legislation.

An estimated one million potential voters could be added to New York state’s rolls should forthcoming legislation be enacted, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. State Sen. Michael Gianaris, the co-sponsor of legislation that would modernize New York’s voter registration system, said his bill “will make it easier for people to vote.” He said he plans to introduce the bill by early June at the latest and, if adopted, it would take effect in 2013.
