State Senator Michael Gianaris honored Sheila Lewandowski of Long Island City’s The Chocolate Factory Theater as part of the state senate’s 15th annual Women of Distinction celebration on May 15 in Albany. New York Could Add 1 Million Voters in 2013

According to a report by New America Media, new legislation that would modernize New York state's voter registration system could add one million voters to the rolls. Senator Gianaris is the co-sponsor of the legislation.

An estimated one million potential voters could be added to New York state’s rolls should forthcoming legislation be enacted, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. State Sen. Michael Gianaris, the co-sponsor of legislation that would modernize New York’s voter registration system, said his bill “will make it easier for people to vote.” He said he plans to introduce the bill by early June at the latest and, if adopted, it would take effect in 2013.

WINNERS AND LOSERS, MAY 25, 2012

City and State reported that Senator Gianaris' video at this year's LCA show was funny and well received by those in attendance.

Word on the street is the Democratic Senator from Queens got the most laughs at this year’s LCA show, with a bit making fun of the Senate Dems’ failed bid at an independent redistricting process this year. It’s not always easy to make fun of yourself, especially on an issue that wasn’t very funny to Gianaris when the gerrymandered district lines were being passed in the Senate during the Big Ugly. (Who can forget Gianaris telling Republican Sen. Mike Nozzolio to take his map and “shove it?”)

Protect Pedestrians, Drivers At Astoria Intersection

The Queens Gazette wrote an article about malfunctioning lights at a busy intersection in Astoria, which Senator Gianaris has urged the Department of Transportation to fix in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. are working to increase safety at a busy intersection in Astoria. Following the recurring failure of all four traffic lights at the 31st Street and Ditmars Boulevard intersection, the three elected officials sent a letter to the Department of Transportation (DOT) requesting an immediate investigation into the functionality of the lights as well as remediation of all problem areas.

State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh and the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law joined with good government and advocacy groups on June 7 to announce the introduction of the Voter Empowerment Act of New York, a nonpartisan initiative to increase voter participation as the 2012 election season commences. This legislation would amend the election law to update, streamline and make more efficient the voter registration process in New York.
