Schumer $hocking 'gougers'

The Post reported that following the announcement of Governor Cuomo's proposal regarding tax abatements for power companies, Senator Schumer has sent a letter to energy companies around the state asking "why the firms believe their tax breaks are in danger and how much of their windfall would go to stockholders. " I have also written similar legislation to the Governor's bill.

Sen. Chuck Schumer yesterday posed four tough questions to operators of the state's private power generating plants -- as consumers and politicians battle shocking rate increases the companies are planning for this summer.

Votes Against Bill To Fast-Track New Plant Construction

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris has voted against legislation that establishes a fast-track process for the siting of new electric generating facilities without providing enough safeguards for overburdened communities.

The bill, S191, allows for the placement of new power plants without properly considering the cumulative effect of new plant construction on neighborhoods that already house numerous power plants.

The Post wrote about legislation that Governor Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg are introducing to resolve the FERC rate hike issue. Senator Gianaris is proud to be one of the first people to stand up and fight against this outrageous rate hike.

ALBANY -- Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg announced legislation yesterday that will head off a threatened 12 percent rate hike for New York City electric customers.

The legislation, first reported by The Post last month, guarantees permanent property-tax abatements to local electric-generating companies, removing the basis for a little-noticed Federal Energy Regulatory Commission decision in January that could hike city electric rates by $500 million a year.

GOP shocker for city electric rates

New York Post wrote an article about the legislation that Senate Republicans passed that expands giveaways for electric-generating companies. We should be standing up for ratepayers not huge corporations.

ALBANY -- Last-minute legislation to head off a threatened 12-percent rate hike for New York City electricity customers was in danger last night as Senate Republicans unexpectedly passed a different measure that could cost the city nearly $2 billion.

Outraged lawmakers and city officials accused the Senate GOP of seeking a massive give-away for electric-generating companies that already are receiving city tax breaks on their property taxes.

Votes Against Bill Giving Windfall to Power-Generating Industry

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris continues to stand up for electricity ratepayers by voting against legislation that expands existing tax abatements for electric-generating companies. The legislation, S5367, permits tax abatements for all power-generating plants and does not offer provisions to offset electricity rate increases for ratepayers, such as the increase passed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in January.

Gianaris: No tax help for Big Electric

This article in the Times Ledger was written just after tax abatement legislation that hurt ratepayers passed in the Senate on Monday. On Wednesday, however, legislation that helps prevent drastic rate hikes was passed by the Senate. I am happy my fellow Senators and I were able to stand up for ratepayers across the state.
