Today is National Kick Butts Day. We cannot allow tobacco companies to continue targeting our youth. If we are to eliminate the health problems associated with tobacco use, we must keep our children from falling victim to aggressive marketing efforts.

Onorato, SHAREing & CAREing Hold Cancer Run/Walk

The Queens Gazette reported on the SHAREing & CAREing Run/Walk To Fight Cancer that took place at Astoria Park on September 25. Senator Gianaris was there advocating for breast and ovarian cancer patients and their families, along with over 200 participants.

Under an early morning sky on September 25, local politicians and community organizers joined area residents at the Astoria Park track for the Senator George Onorato and SHAREing & CAREing Run/Walk To Fight Cancer.

More than 200 persons participated in the run/walk.


Bloomberg in LIC praises decline in city smoking

Yournabe.com reported on the positive impact of Mayor Bloomberg's anti-smoking policies in Long Island City.

While Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-smoking policies have been criticized as draconian, he declared them a success on a visit to the city Department of Health in Long Island City, saying the number of adult smokers is at an all-time low of 14 percent.


The mayor touted the decline in smoking residents early last Thursday at the DOH’s headquarters at 42-09 28th St. Bloomberg said the number of adult residents who smoke has decreased by 35 percent since 2002, the year the mayor’s Smoke Free Air Act was passed by the City Council. In that year, the number of smokers in the city was at a high of 22 out of every 100 residents.



Queens Gazette wrote about Senator Gianaris' support for LIHEAP, a state-run assitance program to help New Yorkers pay their energy bills.

State Senator Michael Gianaris (D–Astoria) issued a reminder yesterday to Western Queens residents to sign up for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, (LIHEAP).


TSA Passenger Advocates Sought By New York Lawmakers

Associated Press wrote about Senator Gianaris' and Senator Schumer's are call for an investigation of the alleged strip-searching incidents by TSA agents at JFK Airport. They are also calling for a designated Passenger Advocate at all airports.Huffington Post picked up on the story:

Two New York lawmakers have called for a passenger advocate at airports to immediately act on complaints by passengers over security screenings.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and state Sen. Michael Gianaris of Queens want the Transportation Security Administration to create the position at all airports.

Senator Gianaris joined Senator Schumer to request the TSA conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation into what actually occurred during the three alleged strip-searching incidents.
