New TV shows to be filmed this year due to film tax credit.

Queens, NY – A record number of new television series are scheduled to be filmed in New York State this year due to the New York State Film Production Credit championed by Senator Michael Gianaris. Eight new television series will be filmed in the state in 2011, creating more than 4,700 industry-related jobs.

The Governor’s Office for Motion Picture and Television Development announced that the film tax credit lured 70 new projects to New York since January. These projects are expected to spend a total of more than $1 billion.

Strip club tries again for liquor license as Long Island City community voices opposition

The Daily News asked Senator Gianaris for his input on the attempted renewal of a liquor license for  a strip club located in Long Island City. The Senator vigorously opposes this application.

The owners of a planned Long Island City strip club are making their second bid for a liquor license, just months after their previous application was overwhelmingly rejected by local and state officials.

The firm, 21 Group Inc., plans to open a gentlemen's club called Gypsy Rose at 42-50 21st St. They will outline their plans tonight to members of Community Board 2, which will then vote on whether to support their application to the State Liquor Authority.

Annual Tour De Queens

Queens Gazette wrote about Senator Gianaris' participation in the Tour de Queens.

A record number of people biked through Eastern and Southern Queens on July 10 as part of the Fourth Annual Tour de Queens. Around 2,000 bicyclists were joined by New York Mets mascot Mr. Met, state Senator Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) and Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson for the event.

“Bicycling is truly a fiveborough phenomenon,” Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives Paul Steely White said. “Thousands of people proved that in Queens yesterday as they rolled through 20 miles of New York’s largest borough for the fourth year in a row.”

Hollywood it ain’t, but New York now has 23 prime-time TV shows filming inside the city -- a record for the Big Apple.

And it’s not just cop dramas: Even shows set in other cities are taping here, including HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” (Atlantic City) and CBS’ “The Good Wife” (Chicago).

The trick?

Producers have been pouring in since the state first offered a 30 percent tax credit to TV and film studios in 2004.

It’s a welcome twist in a city where high taxes have been driving residents and businesses away for decades.

New York City is currently the production site for a record 23 television shows, including 8 new primetime series. New York City’s media and entertainment industry employs 100,000 New Yorkers and generates $5 billion per year for the city’s economy.

GIANARIS LAUDS FILM/TV PROGRAM JOBS

Queens Gazette wrote about the thousands of jobs the film industry, aided by the film tax credit which was championed  by Senator Gianaris, has brought to New York. 

State Senator Michael Gianaris (D–Astoria) had high praise and satisfaction for a program he supported which has created many jobs in his district and elsewhere in New York state.

Gianaris pointed out that the New York State Film Production Credit, which rewards companies that produce films and TV shows in the state with a tax credit, also creates jobs. Gianaris was a lead supporter when the legislation was created and later expanded.
