State Senator Michael Gianaris was named winner in "City and State", on November 9th, 2012.

There was no shortage of victories and losses this week, as voters cast their ballots for scores of candidates across the state and the government continued to grapple with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. From the North Country to Suffolk County, and President Obama on down, the Democrats’ triumphs added up. And though we won’t have a full account of the election’s champs and chumps until all the votes are counted and recounted, here they are: your winners and losers of the week.

Bank’s Wrist Slapped, Give Refund To Customers

State Senator Michael Gianaris and Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr characterize the punishment of Morgan Stanley for its role in an illegal case associating two Astoria power companies insufficient.

State Senator Michael Gianaris and Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. are burned up over a $4.8 million penalty imposed on investment giant Morgan Stanley because of its participation in an illegal anti-competitive case involving two Astoria power companies.


The two Astoria Democrats criticized the U.S. Department of Justice for the punishment it imposed on Morgan Stanley for the giant bank’s role involving two Western Queens power-generating companies, KeySpan Energy Corporation and Astoria Generating Company.

Simotas, Gianaris Fight For Voters’ Rights

Due to the redistribution of voting polls, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and state Senator Michael Gianaris, are raising their concerns over the efficiency of this initiative. 


Continuing their work to promote voters’ rights as this fall’s elections approach, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and state Senator Michael Gianaris are calling on the New York City Board of Elections to review the redistribution of polling sites, which have changed as a result of redistricting this year. Many residents, some of whom have been voting at the same location for decades, will now have to travel significant distances to unfamiliar polling sites in order to vote.

Gianaris Bill aims at boosting Voter Participation

Gianaris-Kavanagh's Bill (Voter Empowerment Act) aims at facilitating the registration process and initiating more participation in the elections. It includes, among others, preregistration of 16- and 17- year olds, online registration of voters and  automatic registration tranfer of New Yorkers who move within the State.

State Senator Michael Gianaris (D–Astoria) emerged last week as part of a nonpartisan, statewide group answering Governor Andrew Cuomo’s call to increase voter participation as the 2012 election season draws near.


Gianaris and Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh have introduced legislation that would amend the state’s election law to streamline and make more efficient the voter registration process in the state.

Gantry Park Tosses Dog Owners a Bone With All-Day Access for Pooches

Senator Gianaris helped increase dogs' acces to Gantry State Plaza, which DNAinfo.com wrote about in the story below. Last year, Senator Gianaris helped renovate the Vernon Boulevard Dog Run in LIC to ensure our four-legged friends have a pleasant environment to spend time.

LONG ISLAND CITY — It’s barking news for LIC dogs!

Neighborhood pooches and their owners can now enjoy strolling along Pier 1 in Gantry Plaza State Park all day after the state Parks Department quietly revised its policy — a major victory for dog owners.

Previously, dog owners had been able to walk their pets on the pier, a popular area for dog-lovers, only from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
