Monthly Column: New Senate report out with a focus on cutting taxes

By: Michael H. Ranzenhofer

This year’s State Budget continued middle-class tax rates at their lowest levels in 60 years, reduced taxes for small businesses under the personal income tax, and cut the corporate tax rate for manufacturers.  These positive initiatives began the process of chipping away at the State’s high tax burden.  New York’s last place finish, measured in business tax climate, needs to change.

Improving this ranking is critical to New York’s long-term economic growth.  That is why I am pleased to announce a new State Senate report with a focus on cutting taxes has been released.

Monthly Column: Honoring All Who Have Served

By: Michael H. Ranzenhofer

It is so important that we remember the great sacrifices that our veterans have given to our nation.

Last week, Governor Cuomo signed legislation, which I carried in the State Senate, to re-name Route 98 as the “Genesee and Orleans Veterans’ Memorial Highway.”  Last month, I joined members of the Wilson Family to unveil the interstate highway 990’s new designation as the “Staff Sergeant William R. Wilson III Memorial Highway.”

As we honor our distinguished military veterans throughout the month of November, I would like to share with you a number of other important State initiatives to support these courageous men and women.

Monthly Column: Stop welfare benefits for cigarettes, beer, lotto tickets…

By: Michael H. Ranzenhofer

During the 2013 Legislative Session, the New York State Senate approved a bill– entitled the Public Assistance Integrity Act– to protect your tax dollars by prohibiting welfare benefits from being spent on beer, lotto tickets and other non-essential items.

Over the years, abuse of public assistance has been well documented.  Earlier this year, the New York Post concluded, after analyzing records obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request, that cash assistance was being misused all too often.

Over the last decade, identity theft has been causing ever-increasing problems for many people across New York State.  According to the Federal Trade Commission, as many as 9 million Americans’ identities are stolen every year.

Due to the availability of information in computer databases; increased use of credit, debit and ATM cards; and the growth in e-commerce, identity theft has become the number one financial and consumer crime of the information age.
