 The Legislative Ethics Commission was created by the Public Employees Ethics Reform Act of 2007. This legislation expanded the former Legislative Ethics Committee and revised the provisions of the Public Officers Law under the Commission's jurisdiction.

(Albany, NY) Originating in 1926 as “Negro History Week”, historian Carter G. Woodson chose February for this celebration because the second week of the month marks the birthdays of both President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. The week of recognition and celebration became recognized and extended to the entire month of February.

Marking February as Black History Month, Senator Breslin said, “This is a time to remember and celebrate the history of African Americans in our society and the many accomplishments made by the African American community. We must also recommit ourselves to fight for social and economic justice.”

Host Women’s Health Forum and Push Hostile Amendments to Force Senate Republican Action

(Albany, NY) The Senate Democratic Conference today continued a sustained push on important women’s issues including women’s health and workplace equality. The Senate Democrats hosted a public forum on the issue of women’s health organized to discuss legislation sponsored by members of the Democratic Conference which the Senate Republican Majority has refused to move out of committee and bring to the floor for a vote. Health professionals and advocates joined Democratic Senators to discuss the issue of women’s health and the bills currently awaiting Senate action.

A call for Legislative Action to Confront Inequity in the Workforce

( Albany, NY) Senator Neil D. Breslin (D – Delmar) reported that the Democratic Conference this week held a roundtable discussion on the inequity women face in the work force. Experts and advocates participated in the roundtable discussion on legislation that would strengthen our state’s economy and promote workplace fairness.

Despite federal and state laws banning discrimination in employment and pay, it is clear that there are still wage differentials amongst employees within the same jobs or in jobs that require the same skills, responsibility, and working conditions.

ALBANY, NY - Senator Neil D. Breslin (D – Delmar) announced that five libraries in his district have been awarded grants from the public library construction grant fund. The libraries are Albany Public Library, Altamont Free Library, Guilderland Public Library, Berne Public Library and the Rensselaerville Library.

“New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading,” explained Breslin. A recent survey showed a documented need for public library construction and renovation projects totaling more than $2.53 billion. More than 40% of the over 1,000 public library buildings in communities across New York are over 60 years old. Another 30% are more than three decades old.

Senator Breslin Urges Awareness and Advocacy

(Albany, NY) Senator Neil D. Breslin (D-Delmar) recognizes April as Autism Awareness Month and encourages New Yorkers to learn more about autism and its effects on children and their families, as well as what can be done to help the cause.

Since the 1970s, April has been designated by the National Autism Society as National Autism Awareness Month in order to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism. Only recently, however, has autism become a national focus as rates have skyrocketed.

Calls for the Inclusion of Microstamping in the Upcoming Budget Proposal

(Albany, NY) – Senator Neil D. Breslin (D – Delmar) along with his fellow Senate Democrats and Assemblymembers, family members who have lost loved ones to gun violence, advocates and law enforcement, joined forces at the State Capitol to urge the State Senate to include microstamping in this year’s budget proposal. Microstamping, which connects shell casings from crime scenes to the first purchaser of a weapon, would provide law enforcement with a critical tool to solve gun crimes. Microstamping has passed the Assembly several times, but so far the Senate has been unwilling to approve it.
