THANK YOU BEACH CLEANUP 2012 VOLUNTEERS! ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS!

This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was held on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10:00 AM until Noon. Hundreds of volunteers combed the beaches and collected over 2000 pounds of debris!  For the 26th year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was another big success!“Thank you to everyone who came out for Beach Cleanup 2012,” Senator Johnson said.  “We had a wonderful response again this year.  Over 345 volunteers gathered a ton of  garbage from the beach and helped raise awareness about the harmful effects of littering and dumping on our shores.”

SENATOR JOHNSON'S BILL TO PROTECT NEW YORK'S YOUTH FROM HARMFUL EFFECTS OF E-CIGARETTES SIGNED INTO LAW

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed two bills to protect New York's children and teenagers from the harmful effects of cigarettes. The new laws include measures to prohibit smoking within 100 feet of the entrances or exits of any public or private schools (A.10141-B / S.6854-B), as well as prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to individuals under the age of 18 (A.9044-B /S.2926-B).

Cheering on the Brave Men and Women Who Participated in the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride

Senator Owen H. Johnson and Assemblyman Phil Boyle joined with other elected officials and members of the community to cheer on the brave men and women who participated in the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride through Babylon on July 20th. The event raised money and awareness for members of our military who have been wounded in combat.  The Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride is a rehabilitative cycling program for injured servicemen and women, giving them the opportunity to reinvigorate their bodies and showing them how much life still has to offer.

SENATOR OWEN H. JOHNSON'S LEGISLATION TO SAFEGUARD NEW YORK’S SEAGRASS AND WILDLIFE WAS SIGNED INTO LAW

Governor Cuomo signed a bill to protect New York’s seagrass beds, an essential part of our underwater environment, and its surrounding wildlife.

“Seagrass beds in New York State are a vital habitat for many species of fish, and by endangering the seagrass, we risk losing some of our vibrant marine life,” Governor Cuomo said. “This bill will stop many of the practices that have been causing our seagrass to die. We can no longer turn a blind eye to procedures that threaten our environment, and I thank Senator Johnson and Assemblyman Sweeney for their hard work to protect this fragile ecosystem.”

SENATOR JOHNSON SPONSORED LEGISLATION PROHIBITING THE SALE OF ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES TO MINORS

Senator Owen H. Johnson (R-Babylon) announced today that the New York State Senate passed a bill he sponsored to prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to persons under 18 years of age.Electronic cigarettes, also known as “e-cigarettes,” are battery-operated devices that vaporize cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals that the user inhales. Currently, there is no prohibition on the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.“This legislation is needed to protect children and young adults from the dangers of smoking electronic cigarettes,” Senator Johnson said.  “To date, electronic cigarettes are unregulated and have not been proven to be safe for use at any age.”

St. Joseph Church in Babylon Celebrates Centennial

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined Assemblyman Phil Boyle in presenting a Legislative Resolution to Monsignor Christopher Heller on June 3, 2012 celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the construction of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church at 39 North Carll Avenue in Babylon Village.The groundbreaking for St. Joseph Church was on June 25, 1911. The Romanesque design is based on the Church of San Stefano in Bologna, Italy.  At the time, St. Joseph Church was the only church of its kind in the United Stated because of its unique all-brick structure.  The architects were Reiley and Steinback of New York, and the builder was John Cockerill of North Babylon who also built the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO CRACK DOWN ON DRUNK DRIVERS

Bill Would Require Offenders to  Take a Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course    The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.4740C), sponsored by Senator Owen H. Johnson (R-C, Babylon), that would require certain drivers convicted of drunk driving to take a motor vehicle accident prevention course.  The bill requires drivers convicted of a drunk driving offense to take the motor vehicle accident prevention course if they are convicted of drunk driving, or refuse to take a chemical test, or have accumulated more than six points on their license.
