Cuomo today announced that New York consumers seeking to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes can now obtain low cost financing and repay the loan on their monthly utility bill. The program, known as On-Bill Recovery Financing, allows costs incurred by homeowners to be offset through energy savings while reducing consumption and air pollution, making it a win-win for New Yorkers.

West Islip, NY – Walter Baraclough donates blood at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center several times a year.  More than 10 years ago, his wife was told she could no longer be a blood donor due to a medical issue.  This motivated Baraclough even more to be a regular donor.  Someone in this country needs a lifesaving transfusion every three seconds.  New York Blood Center requires more than 2,000 volunteer blood donations each day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in close to 200 regional hospitals.  Each donation of blood can h

Four Key Votes To Get Dangerous Drivers Off the Road

The State Senate this week sent a loud and clear message that New York State must have zero tolerance when it comes to drunk, impaired or reckless driving.    In a strong showing of bi-partisan cooperation, we overwhelmingly approved four separate measures designed to save lives, punish offenders and keep dangerous drivers off the streets. ·    The first bill, which seeks to combat wrong way and reckless drivers, would establish a new class E felony crime of aggravated reckless driving. The new crime would be punishable by a sentence of up to 4 years in prison.

Jennifer Melfi, 13 Year Old Amateur Radio Operator, Received Senate Citation

Senator Owen H. Johnson honored 13 year old amateur radio operator Jennifer Melfi with a Senate Citation for assisting Babylon Town’s emergency operations efforts during Tropical Storm Irene.  Jennifer Melfi received the citation in front of 150 ham radio operators at the Amateur Radio Convention at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage on January 8, 2012.  “Jennifer Melfi has performed a valuable service to our community and demonstrates that her young age did not prevent her from lending tremendous help during a disaster,” Senator Johnson said.  “I am honored to congratulate this outstanding young lady for her exemplary community service with the Town of Babylon Emergency Operations Center.”

Senator Owen H. Johnson's Holiday Toy Drive Delivered Over A Thousand Toys to Children of Soldiers of the Fighting 69th!

Senator Owen H. Johnson's Holiday Toy Drive delivered over a thousand toys to children of soldiers of the Fighting 69th  Infantry Regiment.  The toys were collected for the children of the many soldiers who have returned home to Long Island and are suffering the hardships of this difficult economy.  Senator Johnson presented the gifts at the Fighting 69th  Infantry Regiment’s annual Christmas party at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Farmingdale on December 17, 2011.

School Tax Relief Program (STAR) Application Deadline March 1, 2012

Senator Owen H. Johnson wants to remind you that the deadline for New York State’s School Tax Relief Program (STAR) is March 1, 2012.   STAR is a tax relief program that lowers property taxes for owner-occupied primary residences.  There are two levels of STAR benefits: Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR.

Senators Renew Efforts To Protect School Taxpayers

    Continuing their effort to protect property taxpayers, Senators Kenneth P. LaValle (1st Senate District), John Flanagan (2nd Senate District), Lee Zeldin (3rd Senate District) and Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District) are pushing forward to get restoration of building aid to four Suffolk County school districts.  Today, they took the first step in that process by gaining Senate Education Committee approval of legislation that would restore funding that was vetoed last year by Governor Andrew Cuomo for Central Islip, Smithtown, Rocky Point and Babylon.

Johnson congratulated Nan Doherty on her appointment as the new Principal of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School.  Nan Doherty replaced former Principal Walter Lace who recently retired.“I am most happy to congratulate Nan Doherty in her new role as Principal of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School,” Senator Johnson said.  “I am confident that St. John’s future is  in good hands under her direction and leadership, and wish her all the best in her new role as Principal.”

New Laws Taking Effect January 1, 2012

TAX CUTS AND PROPERTY TAX CAP HIGHLIGHT NEW JANUARY 1ST LAWSMiddle class tax cuts that will reduce tax rates for millions of hardworking taxpayers and the two-percent property tax cap highlight new state laws that will go into effect on January 1, 2012.The recently enacted tax cuts will reduce tax rates on middle class taxpayers to their lowest levels in more than 50 years (Chapter 55, L.2011). About 4.4 million middle class taxpayers will receive a total of  $690 million in personal income tax relief.

Thanksgiving Food Drive A Huge Success!

Dear Friends:

Over three tons of food was donated to my Thanksgiving Food Drive!  At five collection sites throughout the 4th Senate District, generous donations totaling 6,274 pounds of food was collected and delivered to Long Islanders in need. Thanks to your overwhelming response, generous donations helped stock the many food pantries and soup kitchens in our community that have difficulty keeping up with the demand.  We were able to supplement over 4,902 meals for Long Islanders who desperately needed our help.

Senator Owen H. Johnson Applauds Governor Cuomo's Signature on the Middle Class Tax Cut and Job Creation Plan

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and members of the Senate Majority today to applaud Governor Cuomo's signature on the Middle Class Tax Cut and Job Creation Plan.  The legislation reduces the MTA payroll tax on small businesses while maintaining the necessary funding for the MTA from other sources. The tax will be eliminated for 289,000 small businesses, defined as those having an annual payroll between $10,000 and $1.25 million, in the MTA region. Additionally, more than 6,000 businesses with payrolls between $1.25 and $1.75 million will see their payroll tax cut by either one third or two-thirds. The MTA payroll tax cut will also benefit approximately 414,000 self-employed taxpayers.
