West Islip's Nancy Donohue Named 2007 NYS Woman Of Distinction

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, this week presented Nancy Donohue of West Islip with a 2007 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award at a special ceremony held at the State Legislative Office Building in Albany. Donohue joined more than 40 women from all across New York State who were recognized this year for their contributions which have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.

Senator Johnson Bestows Liberty Medal On Captain Al Cinotti Of West Islip

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, recently bestowed the New York State Senate Liberty Medal -- the highest honor the State Senate of New York bestows upon a citizen -- on Captain Al Cinotti of West Islip. The Senator honored Cinotti for his heroism in saving a man from a burning building last year on Higbie Lane while he was off duty.

Senator Johnson Announces $50,000 Grant For FOCUS

Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee recently met with Susan Rothman, Executive Director of FOCUS "For Our Children and Us" in his Babylon office where he handed Ms. Rothman a presentation check for $50,000 which represents a state grant that he secured for the organization as part of the 2007 New York State budget.

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, recently presented a New York State Legislative Resolution to the Babylon Rotary Club on the occasion of their 60th anniversary.

Senator Johnson Secures $60,000 Grant For Family Service League

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, announced that he has secured a New York State Legislative Grant in the amount of $60,000 for Family Service League. The grant will go to further the work of the Iovino South Shore Family Center in Bay Shore and Children and Parents Together (CAPT).

"I am proud to support Family Service League," said Senator Johnson. " FSL’s work is critical in helping Long Island’s children and families achieve independence and self-esteem."

Johnson Backs Plan To Double Senior Citizen Property Tax Rebates

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon) joined Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and his colleagues this week in announcing a plan to double the size of direct property tax rebate checks for senior citizen homeowners. The Senate bill, which was introduced this week would return about $200 million to senior citizens. Funds for the increased senior rebate checks would come from higher-than-projected State revenues realized at end of the 2006-07 state fiscal year.

Senator Johnson Speaks At Bay Shore Summit

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, recently addressed the community at the annual Bay Shore/Brightwaters Community Summit. Senator Johnson spoke to the community about the additional money he was able to secure for Bay Shore Schools this year’s budget. The budget provided Bay Shore with more than $36 million in total aid -- an increase of more than $1.8 million over last year and $1.4 million than was proposed by Governor Spitzer.

Senator Johnson Sponsors Bill To Aid World Trade Center Workers

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, announced that he has signed on as a sponsor of legislation that would extend the time period to file a notice of claim for certain persons who sustained injury as a result of the World Trade Center rescue, recovery and cleanup operations. The bill, S.2176, is currently being considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senator Owen Johnson Secures Funding To Restore Bay Shore Marina

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, announced this week that he has secured $1.5 million in state funding to help restore the popular and well utilized Bay Shore Marina. The funding will be used for new decking, sidewalk upgrades, replaced benches and improved handicapped accessibility. Also, the south wall will receive 1,372 linear feet of steel bulkheading to replace the current dilapidated wood.

Senator Johnson’s 2007 Beach Cleanup A Success

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Long Island Marine District, announced that the 373 volunteers who showed up for his Annual Beach Cleanup Day this year removed 2,400 pounds of debris from the shoreline at Robert Moses State Park. Senator Johnson has been sponsoring his annual cleanup in conjunction with International Coastal Cleanup for several years.

Senator Johnson Gives $50,000 Boost To Brentwood Library’s Career Center

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, recently paid a visit to the Brentwood Public Library where he had the opportunity to visit the library’s Career and Educational Resource Center, for which he recently secured a $50,000 state grant.

The Center provides residents with the resources they need to either secure employment or enhance their career by offering counseling and training and collaborating with other programs such as the AFL-CIO-sponsored Apprenticeship Program.

Johnson/Senate Pass $6 Billion, Two-year Property Tax Relief Plan

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, joined his Senate colleagues this week in passing a three-part property tax relief plan (S.1) that would significantly expand the Senate-initiated property tax relief rebate program. The plan calls for $2.6 billion in property tax relief this year, and $3.4 billion in 2008.
