Arbor Day Recognition Project at Bayard Cutting Arboretum

Senator Owen H. Johnson applauded over 100 volunteers who donated their time and effort at an Arbor Day Recognition Project to care for the trees on the grounds of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum at Great River on March 24, 2012. Members of the Long Island Arboricultural Association, Inc. (LIAA) spent the day removing dead and diseased trees and branches, and pruning healthy trees at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum as part of their ongoing effort to care for and preserve Long Island’s trees and shrubs. A ceremonial tree planting was part of the day's events.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union Opens New Branch In West Babylon

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined employees of  Bethpage Federal Credit Union along with members of the Babylon Town Chamber of Commerce and other elected officials to celebrate the opening of the new Bethpage Federal Credit Union branch in West Babylon.  The official ribbon cutting ceremony took place on February 16, 2012 at the new branch location at 555 Montauk Highway, West Babylon in the Pathmark Shopping Center.

Talented Artists From West Islip Elementary Schools Chosen To Display Artwork At State Capitol Exhibit

Senator Owen H. Johnson met with three talented young artists from West Islip Elementary Schools at the State Capitol on March 14, 2012.  Brianna Compitello from Bayview Elementary School, and Sydney Krawchuk and Tyler Foran, both from Westbrook Elementary School were chosen to display their artwork at the 22nd Annual State-wide New York State Art Teachers Association 2012 Legislative Student Art Exhibit:  A Celebration of Young Artists.“It was a pleasure to meet with such talented young artists from West Islip, and I congratulate them for being invited to show their wonderful artwork in this celebratory exhibit,” Senator Johnson said.

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES ACCELERATED ROAD AND BRIDGE PROJECTS ON LONG ISLAND AS PART OF NY WORKS PROGRAM$40,686,000 Investment to Repair 86 Miles of Roads and Six BridgesGovernor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced an additional and accelerated $40,686,000 investment for nine NY Works projects that will repair 86 miles of roads and six bridges on Long Island. For the transportation component of NY Works, the Department of Transportation (DOT) reviewed its Capital Program and identified those projects, which can be accelerated by utilizing either the conventional design-bid-build project delivery mechanism or the newly-enacted design-build project delivery method.

Senate Completes Second Consecutive Early Passage of State Budget

For the second consecutive year, the New York State Senate has completed an early passage of the state budget. The 2012-13 state budget achieves the Senate Republicans’ goals of reducing state spending, not raising taxes and creating new private sector jobs.  The new state fiscal year begins April 1st.

Tax Cuts Taking Effect April 1, 2012

Dear Friend:

I wanted to inform you about two tax cuts taking effect this Sunday, April 1st.

* State Sales Tax Exemption for Clothing and Footwear

All clothing and footwear sold for less than $110 per item (or per pair for footwear) will be exempt from the New York State 4% sales tax starting April 1st.  Additionally, most fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, snaps, hooks, zippers and similar items that are used to make or repair exempt clothing will also be eligible for the exemption.  The exemption from state sales tax is in effect year-round.

* MTA Payroll Tax Repeal

West Islip High School Student Christopher Wilson Hosts Blood Drive

Senator Owen H. Johnson and Assemblyman Phil Boyle joined Christopher Wilson at a Blood Drive and Fundraiser he hosted on March 3, 2012 at the Babylon Masonic Lodge No. 793 in Babylon.  Over 113 pints of blood and $5000 were collected for Good Samaritan Hospital.Christopher, a Junior at West Islip High School, hosted the blood drive to repay the community for the kindness and support he received after serious injuries he sustained when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Barberry Road and Montauk Highway while walking to school on the morning of October 24, 2011.  Christopher required 7 pints of blood in order to save his lower leg and is currently recuperating from his numerous injuries.

Suffolk County Community College Student Helen Bagnato of North Babylon Presented Mathematical Research at State Capitol.

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined Assemblyman Phil Boyle in welcoming Helen Bagnato, of North Babylon, to the State Capitol on February 29, 2012.  Ms. Bagnato, an NSF S STEM Scholar (National Science Foundation – Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) at Suffolk County Community College, participated in the “SUNY Undergraduate Research Symposium:  A Showcase of Scholarly Posters at the Capitol.”

At the symposium, Ms. Bagnato presented her research on Atmospheric Stability Classification, a project she worked on as part of a Suffolk County Community College internship at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  Her research involved a measure of stability class or how quickly gaseous pollutants spread using mathematical analysis.  The purpose of the research was to provide information to be used to evaluate applications for emergency response.

Landmark Legislation Signed Into Law

Dear Friend:

My colleagues and I in the New York Senate recently joined with Governor Cuomo and the Assembly to pass historic reforms with the approval of five pieces of critical legislation. The major elements include the passage of:

•    A sweeping pension reform plan that will save state and local governments over $80 billion over the next 30 years;

•    A constitutional amendment and legal statute that reforms the redistricting process in New York State;

•    An “all crimes” DNA databank bill, which reforms our criminal justice system to better protect New Yorkers and makes New York the first state in the nation to require DNA samples from anyone convicted of a felony or a Penal Law misdemeanor;

LANDMARK ANTI-CRIME BILL BECOMES LAW / SENATE, ASSEMBLY & GOVERNOR JOIN FORCES TO EXPAND DNA DATABANK

All-Crimes DNA Law a Powerful Crimefighting Tool To Help Protect New Yorkers

Senator Johnson announced a new law that will implement the largest expansion of the State’s DNA databank since it was first created in 1994. 

The databank expansion will help close thousands of unsolved cases, bring justice to crime victims, and help prevent dangerous criminals from committing additional crimes.

 “This is a huge victory for all New Yorkers concerned about protecting our communities and keeping our loved ones safe. This landmark legislation will help close thousands of unsolved cases, provide justice to crime victims and help prevent future crimes from taking place,” Senator Johnson said.

All-County Instrumental and Vocal Ensembles Perform at the State Capitol.

Senator Owen H. Johnson welcomed talented musicians from several high schools across Suffolk County at the Empire State Plaza in Albany on March 6, 2012.   The students  performed with the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s (SCMEA) All-County Instrumental and Vocal Ensembles.  The two groups performed as part of “Music in Our Schools Month” sponsored by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA). 

Directors of the Jazz Choir were Rich Harris, Jr. and Jeff Hoffman.  Directors of the Instrumental Jazz Ensemble were Ron Fox and Frank Hansen.

Johnson congratulated Suffolk County High School students who performed with the All-State Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles in Albany on March 5, 2012.  The talented musicians performed at a New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) reception honoring the late Joseph R. Sugar, a tireless advocate for the advancement of music education in our schools.

Good Samaritan Hospital Partnered With NY Senator Johnson for Lifesaving Blood Drive

Good Samaritan Hospital partnered with Senator Owen H. Johnson for a lifesaving blood drive collecting 221 pints of blood on February 27, 2012.  The blood drive took place at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, from 6:00 AM until 9:00 PM, with two New York Blood Center mobile units were available in the hospital’s front and rear parking lots for the convenience of donors.  “I would like to thank each individual who took a few minutes out of their busy schedule to come to Good Samaritan Hospital to donate the gift of life,” Senator Johnson said.  “Each person who donated blood today could potentially help save up to three lives.  Thank you for supporting such an important cause.”

Eileen M. Grubert and Alex “Buddy” Gillespie Honored at Deer Park Fire District Surprise Celebration

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined with members of the Deer Park Fire District at a surprise retirement celebration for both Eileen Grubert, District Secretary and Manager, and Alex “Buddy” Gillespie, District Treasurer.  Both have dedicated 35 years to the Deer Park Fire District and were presented with Citations by Senator Johnson for their profound dedication.

Eileen Grubert, as District Secretary and Manager, has been an integral part of managing the day to day operations of the Deer Park Fire District allowing the fire fighters to concentrate on their task of protecting the Deer Park residents from fire.

Fallen Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy Honored By Town of Islip

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined with Islip Town officials on January 26, 2012 at the MacArthur Airport to honor fallen Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy.  Lt. Murphy lost his life at age 29 during a bitter firefight with the Taliban in the mountains of Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy’s parents, Dan and Maureen Murphy, and brother John Murphy of Patchogue, accepted the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award on Michael’s behalf.

The ceremony included remarks from Lt. Murphy’s family and Islip Town Supervisor Croci as well as a video that chronicled the mission and sacrifices of Lt. Murphy and his fellow Navy SEALS.
