Cancer Screening Program of Western Suffolk County Provides Services to the Uninsured.

If you are between the ages of 50-64, you may be eligible for free cancer screening through the Cancer Services Program.  The Cancer Services Program of Western Suffolk County is administered by Good Samaritan Hospital.  It is a network of health care professionals and organizations that bring their resources, skills and expertise together to provide education, targeted outreach and comprehensive cancer screening services to the community. 

The Cancer Services Program reimburses hospitals and health care providers for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening and diagnostic services they provide to uninsured and underinsured men and women.

School Tax Relief Program (STAR) Application Deadline March 1, 2011

Senator Owen H. Johnson wants to remind you that the deadline for New York State’s School Tax Relief Program (STAR) is March 1, 2011.   STAR is a tax relief program that lowers property taxes for owner-occupied primary residences.  There are two levels of STAR benefits: Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR.

Basic STAR is available to residents who own and live in their own 1- ,2- , or 3-family house, condominium, or cooperative apartment and earn less than $500,000 a year.  There is no age limit for Basic STAR.  For qualifying homeowners, Basic STAR exempts the first $30,000 of the full value of a home from school taxes. Once you are approved for Basic STAR, you need not reapply each year unless you move to a new primary residence.

New Imaging Facility Opens in Islip

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined local officials and representatives from the Bohlsen Women’s Imaging Center and the North Shore-LIJ Imaging Center at Great South Bay to celebrate the grand opening of their 620 Main Street facility in Islip.  The event, which took place on Thursday, December 9, 2010, marked the opening of the combined diagnostic imaging center and women’s health imaging center which occupies two floors of the 10,000-square foot complex.  The combined imaging center includes the latest in high quality resolution, low-dose radiation technology for disciplines such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedics and breast imaging, among others.

The Spirit of Christmas is alive and well in the 4th Senate District!

Senator Owen H. Johnson presented over one hundred toys this Christmas for the children of members of the Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment.  Senator Johnson presented the gifts to Sergeant Colin Stewart, a member of the 69th Regiment and Beth DelliPizzi, wife of Lieutenant Louis DelliPizzi, who has donated her time to circulate the gifts to families in need this holiday season.

“I’d like to thank all of those who so generously donated toys for the boys and girls of the soldiers assigned to the Fighting 69th,” Senator Johnson said.   “The wonderful response has been a reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well in my Senate District.”

Suffolk County welcomes the largest solar project in the history of New York State.

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined Steve Levy, Suffolk County Executive and Gordian Raacke, Executive Director of Renewable Energy Long Island in applauding the Suffolk Solar Carport Project.  This is the largest solar project in the history of New York State.  Seven parking lots, currently owned by Suffolk County, are to be leased for the construction of carports that will hold a total of 60,000 solar panels on the rooftops.  The county lots are located at:  the H. Lee Dennison Building and the North County Complex in Hauppauge, the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip, the Riverhead County Center, as well as county-owned parking lots at the Long Island Railroad stations in Brentwood, Ronkonkoma and Deer Park.
