Johnson Backs Plan To Double Senior Citizen Property Tax Rebates

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon) joined Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and his colleagues this week in announcing a plan to double the size of direct property tax rebate checks for senior citizen homeowners. The Senate bill, which was introduced this week would return about $200 million to senior citizens. Funds for the increased senior rebate checks would come from higher-than-projected State revenues realized at end of the 2006-07 state fiscal year.

March 1st Deadline to Apply for New York State's School Tax Relief (STAR)

Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senatorial District) wants to remind you that the deadline for New York State’s School Tax Relief Program (STAR) is March 1st.   STAR is a tax relief program that lowers property taxes for owner-occupied primary residences.  There are two levels of STAR benefits; Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR.

SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH FIXED SCHOOL TAX RATE FOR SENIORS

    The New York State Senate today passed legislation, sponsored by Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson), that would establish a fixed real property school tax rate for seniors who are eligible for the enhanced STAR exemption, providing much needed tax relief to hundreds of thousands of seniors throughout New York State.

SENATE PASSES HISTORIC PROPERTY TAX LEVY CAP LEGISLATION: BILL ALSO PROVIDES FOR MANDATE RELIEF

     The New York State Senate passed historic property tax relief legislation that enacts a cap on the growth of local property taxes. The bill (S.5856), sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos, will cap school and local government taxes to less than two percent or the Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is lower. Mandate relief is also included, with $127 million in savings to local governments, in addition to the creation of a Mandate Relief Council to identify and repeal unsound, unduly burdensome laws and regulations.

SENATE PASSES BILLS TO HELP TAXPAYERS

  On New York State’s tax filing deadline, the state Senate yesterday passed legislation that would expedite payment of income tax refunds and simplify STAR property tax relief filings for senior citizens.    A bill sponsored by Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset) ensures prompt payment of a state income tax refund. Traditionally, the state Department of Taxation and Finance has held returns requesting refunds for up to two months, starting from when taxpayers file their return to when they may actually see the refund.

SENATE PASSES BILLS MAKING IT EASIER TO OBTAIN STAR EXEMPTIONS

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to simplify the process for senior citizens and other qualifying homeowners to apply for and receive their STAR property tax exemption.  Legislation (S1924), sponsored by Senator Kemp Hannon (R, C, I, - Garden City), would eliminate the requirement that senior citizens reapply for the STAR property tax exemption every year.
