On October 13, 2010, the Babylon Village Arts Council honored Senator Owen H. Johnson at a fundraiser at the Babylon Masonic Lodge. Senator Johnson was instrumental in securing the initial funding for the not-for profit organization.
The Babylon Village Arts Council was formed in 2003 by a group of village residents who recognized the need to present various art experiences to the Babylon Village community. From that vision the Babylon Village Arts Council has become an integral part in the cultural lives of its residents.

John V. O’Shea, Executive Director of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, honored Senator Owen H. Johnson for his 29 years of service to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission for his steadfast commitment to fisheries conservation.
Senator Owen H. Johnson presented a Legislative Resolution to Dr. Beth Virginia Blau, West Islip School District Superintendent of Schools, upon her retirement after many years of dedicated service. The celebration took place on October 1, 2010 at Captain Bill’s in Bay Shore.
“The excellence and the success of the West Islip Public Schools is due, in a large part, to Dr. Beth Blau’s efforts and many years of dedicated service,” Senator Johnson said. “Her enthusiasm and unparalleled devotion to the quality of educational programs and opportunities has left a legacy to the residents of the West Islip community and to future generations of its students.”
Senator Owen H. Johnson joined with local officials to applaud Roberts Plywood Co. for their enthusiasm about “Going Green.” On October 2, 2010 the company unveiled a new Solar Panel System which will create clean and natural energy for the company’s operation without polluting the environment. Roberts Plywood, located at 45 North Industry Court in Deer Park, is a family owned business operating for 33 years and dedicated to the preservation of the environment.

The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, Inc. and the National Park Service hosted a “Topping Out” Ceremony at the Fire Island Lighthouse on September 20, 2010 to commemorate the completion of the new Fresnel Lens Building's steel framework.

Thomas Sandoval recently met with Senator Owen H. Johnson as part of his Citizenship in the Community Badge, a prerequisite for his Eagle Scout. Thomas fulfilled his requirement to interview an elected official on citizenship in the community.

Mrs. Fran Sweeney and fellow residents of the community located south of Montauk Highway brought their concerns to Senator Owen Johnson regarding the safety of this intersection. Cars were frequently being cut off as traffic moved to either turn onto Peninsula Drive or to turn onto Montauk Highway. Mrs. Sweeney requested safety improvements including the installation of lane signs and a turn arrow.
Opening day ceremonies for the South Shore Soccer Club, Inc. were held on September 11, 2010 at Van Bourgondien Park. The ceremony began with a banner parade and, afterward, the teams gathered for encouraging remarks for a fun filled season.

Senator Owen H. Johnson and Assemblyman Phil Boyle presented Luge Gold Medalist Aidan Kelly from Bay Shore with a New York State Legislative Citation honoring his outstanding achievements. This past year, Aidan raced his way to a Gold Medal in the Adirondack Ice Breaker in Lake Placid. Aidan is currently ranked #3 in the United States among youth luge athletes, which catapulted Aidan to the “C” team, known as the Candidate team. Being named to a USA Luge team is a unique honor and experience for only a select few. Only athletes with the talent, desire and work ethic necessary to excel in luge in the future are selected to the team.
Thank you to all who made Beach Cleanup 2010 a wonderful success! This year over 400 volunteers collected 1600 pounds of debris from the Robert Moses State Park beaches.
The lessons we hope our young volunteers learn through their participation in Beach Cleanup is the vital importance of keeping our oceans and beaches clean and the value of volunteering for the greater good. We also help to provide collection data for the American Littoral Society and the State Department of Environmental Conservation so that those agencies can evaluate the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent ocean pollution.
Senator Owen H. Johnson and other state and local officials gathered with Leslie DeMarco, Secretary of the Long Island Blue Star Moms Chapter NY6 at the third annual Babylon to Beaches Soldier Ride which took place July 23, 2010. Over 700 riders participated in the 22 mile trek from Babylon Town Hall to Overlook Beach in Islip. Over $70,000 was raised for the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Blue Star Mothers of America is a nonpartisan organization of mothers who have or have had children honorably serving in the military. They provide support and programs for injured service members.
Senator Owen H. Johnson and Assemblyman Robert Sweeney presented a Legislative Resolution to the Lindenhurst High School Baseball Team congratulating them on winning the New York State Class AA Championship Title. The Bulldogs won their first state title by defeating Guilderland High School by a score of 15-2. In addition, they won their first Suffolk County baseball championship since 1963 by defeating Longwood 5-4, and attained their first Long Island championship by beating Calhoun 4-2. The team’s overall record is 26-1.
Senator Owen H. Johnson presented the Bay Shore Lady Marauders and Coach Jim McGowan with a Legislative Resolution congratulating them on their New York State Class AA Championship. The celebration dinner took place at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore on Aug. 11, 2010.
“Coach Jim McGowan has done a superb job in guiding and inspiring the Bay Shore Lady Marauders,” Senator Johnson said. “The team members have proven themselves to be an unbeatable combination of talents and have made the community very proud!”
The Team’s overall record was 27-1. They defeated Cicero-North Syracuse by a score of 4-0 for the Championship.

Senator Owen H. Johnson joined the Babylon Village Little Leaguers 8 Year Old Division Gold Champions at Opening Day Ceremonies. This past season the League worked with members of the American Legion Post #94 in Babylon and honored service veterans from the Babylon area, recognizing and thanking their “Hometown Heroes.”
Senator Owen H. Johnson presented the Babylon Chorale with a New York Senate Resolution recognizing their 60th season. The celebration took place at the Gazebo in Bay Shore during their performance at the “2010 Arts Festival by the Bay.”
The Babylon Chorale began under the direction of H. Dudley Mairs and, through dedication and hard work, has grown into one of Long Island’s premier choral groups, with members from both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Senator Owen H. Johnson welcomed Patricia J. Macaluso of East Northport and Brian G. White of Lindenhurst to Albany for the 2010 Legislative Session. They were participants in the New York Senate Internship Program from January through April. The Senate offers approximately 30 talented and able undergraduate students an opportunity to experience state government and the legislative process, through their participation in an on-site, academic enriching, and career building work experience. The program includes an opportunity for students to write legislation on the topic of their choice and participate in debate during a mock session in the Senate Chamber.
