SENATOR GALLIVAN WORKING WITH LOCAL SUPERVISORS TO IMPROVE SEX OFFENDER NOTIFICATION LAWS

"Protecting citizens, especially our most vulnerable, is a basic requirement of government at every level. After having spoken with town supervisors and local law enforcement extensively, I share their concerns that placing level 2 and 3 sex offenders in state operated residential group homes jeopardizes the quality of life for West Seneca, Scottsville and other western New York residents, and the safety of area children, while violating the spirit of New York’s sex offender notification laws, if not their letter."

SENATE PASSES BILL TO PREVENT WELFARE CARDS FROM BUYING TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND BEING USED AT LIQUOR STORES, CASINOS AND STRIP CLUBS

The New York Senate today passed the “Public Assistance Integrity Act,” sponsored by Senator Tom Libous, which would prohibit welfare benefits from being used to purchase alcohol and tobacco, or to be used at liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs in New York.

“Public Assistance should not be spent at liquor stores, casinos or strip clubs, but under New York State Law, it’s legal. We need to stop this abuse,” said Libous. “Every welfare dollar spent at the liquor store is money that could be going to help families get back on their feet.”

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR PATRICK M. GALLIVAN - EDUCATION INVESTMENT INCENTIVES ACT

The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo’s primary education system is an integral part of our community’s past, its present and its future. As the Diocese implements its restructuring plan, New York State should be a partner in trying to alleviate some of the burden potentially affecting thousands of families across Western New York. As a supporter of public and private education, I have sponsored the “education investment incentives act,” which provides tax credits for individuals and parents who donate to a host of different educational advancement organizations that support public, private or home-schooled students. The Senate has passed this legislation several times and I believe it carries the requisite support in the Assembly for passage.
