CHANCELLOR UPDATES ON SUNY COLLEGE INDEPENDENCE

State University Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, questioned by Senator Patty Ritchie during today's Higher Education budget hearing, provides an update on the shared services--and shared presidents--initiative at the Canton and Potsdam campuses.

Senator Ritchie has been challenging SUNY's central admionistration to find operational savings in other ways than to eliminate the college presidencies, arguing that the campuses need independent leadership.

Earlier, SUNY committed to an announcement a leadership search sometime this year, and Chancellor Zimpher says more information will be forthcoming athe the SUNY Board's March meeting, which is currently scheduled for March 18 and 19, at the SUNY Purchase campus.

Agriculture Budget Hearing

Senator Patty Ritchie, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, quizzes First Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Jim Bays on the Governor's Executive Budget proposal, including funding for critical research, education and marketing programs.

Senator Ritchie highlighted the need for funding for apple farmers devastated by recent hurricanes,  a proposal to cut funding to the Farm Viability Institute, and property tax relief for farmers.

The hearing took place on Monday, Feb. 4th, and is one of the first steps to enacting an on-time budget before the April 1 deadline.

EPIC: Helping New York State Seniors Stay Healthy

1,000 Seniors Attend Ritchie Health Fair

1,000 seniors turned out for the 2d Annual Senator Ritchie Senior Health and Wellness Fair, held at the Watertown Fairgounds Arena. The event featured free information, health checks and giveaways--all aimed at heping seniotrs stay healthy and active.

Two more Senior fairs are planned for Oct. 3 in Ogdensburg, and Oct. 11 in Fulton.

ON THE RECORD: SENATOR RITCHIE DISCUSSES IDEAS FOR MANDATE RELIEF

Senator Patty Ritchie was interviewd on WRVO Public Radio on her idea to provide additional mandate relief for local taxpayers by addressing the problem of state prisoners currently being held in local county jails.

Senator Ritchie has written to the Commissioner of Corrections and Community Supervision to ask that he use underfilled state prisons, such as the Watertown Correctional Facility at Dry Hill, to hold state parole violators who are being housed in overstocked county jails in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties.

The exhibit is taking place at the Jefferson County Historical Society, the St. Lawrence County Historical Society, Madrid's Heritage Days, and coming soon to Oswego County.

A Blue Ribbon for Ritchie from the Jefferson County Fair


Senator Patty Ritchie helped open the 2012 Jefferson County Fair on July 10, and got an added surprise when fair President Bob Simpson singled her out for her efforts to untangle a bureaucrat's snafu that threatened a smooth opening.

According to Simpson, Senator Ritchie's intervention saved organizers "thousands of dollars" and helped ensure another successful season for the fair, which is visited by tens of thousands of people from across Northern and Central New York.

RITCHIE HONORS OSWEGO HS SCHOLAR-ATHLETE DRAKE BECKSTED

Senator Patty Ritchie honored Oswego High scholar-athlete Drake Becksted with a formal resolution (J.4939) in the Senate Chamber on June 13.

Drake has  achieved the rank of scholar-athlete throughout his four years in high school, served as team co-captain and five yearMost Valuable Player on the Varsity Swimming and Diving Team.

MEET NYPA'S NEW 'CHAIRMAN,' JOHN KOELMEL

Buffalo's John Koelmel was confirmed as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Power Authority, and is expected to be shortly named Chairman of the nation's largest public power company.

Koelmel, who is the CEO of the First Niagara Bank, discusses his experience and vision for NYPA during a nomination hearing Tuesday before the Senate's Energy Committee.

Senator Patty Ritchie, who is a member of that committee, spoke to Koelmel, and urged him to focus on the North Country and NYPA's role in helping to support local business and grow the region's economy.
