Oswego County residents joined Senator Patty Ritchie to “Fight the Bite” Saturday, disposing of more than 5,600 tires at free waste tire disposal events taking place throughout Oswego County. The total is nearly three times more tires than were collected at similar events last year.
$200,000 Kickstarts Project to Bring More Shipments, Jobs to the Facility
State Senator Patty Ritchie today announced that she has secured $200,000 in special state grant funding to start dredging at the Port of Ogdensburg.
“The future of Ogdensburg’s deep water port is at risk from 30 years of silt build up that makes docking more difficult, dangerous and costly,” said Senator Ritchie. “This funding helps kickstart the dredging project, protects jobs and adds to the Port’s potential to increase shipping and work opportunities.”
Builds Upon Past Aid for a Total of $400,000 to Support Dredging Efforts
State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has secured $200,000 in special funding to help the City of Fulton and the Town of Granby in their work to dredge Lake Neatahwanta and ultimately make the body of water usable again. This most recent support—which comes just days before dredging is slated to begin—builds upon $200,000 secured last year by Senator Ritchie; bringing the two year total to $400,000.
“The bodies of water that dot Oswego County are some of the most beautiful in the world and for a long time, residents have been working to help improve water quality and access to the waterways which offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities as well as support jobs and attract tourists to our region,” said Senator Ritchie.
$100,000 in state funds caps three-year effort to battle invasive weeds in St. Lawrence County's biggest lake
State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has secured $100,000 to help fight weeds on Black Lake, a popular spot for fishing, boating and outdoor recreation in St. Lawrence County.
In recent years, Eurasian Milfoyle—a non-native nuisance weed which forms dense mats of vegetation that shades out native species—has plagued Black Lake; disrupting water flow, hurting water quality, and hampering boating, fishing and swimming.
“For generations, Black Lake has provided countless opportunities for outdoor recreation to both tourists and local residents,” said Senator Ritchie. “I’m thrilled to be able to provide this funding which will improve the quality of and access to Black Lake—two things that are critical not only to boosting tourism but also for enjoyment by those who call Northern New York home.”
Events Held in Conjunction With St. Lawrence County Highway Department
State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she will host two free waste tire disposal events in St. Lawrence County on Saturday, September 27th.
The events—which are being held in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County Highway Department—are aimed at cleaning up St. Lawrence County, preventing the spread of illnesses by eliminating tires that breed disease carrying insects and protecting the environment.
“My free waste tire disposal events provide a great opportunity to help clean up our community, prevent the spread of disease and keep St. Lawrence County beautiful,” said Senator Ritchie.
“I’d like to thank the St. Lawrence County Highway Department, especially it’s Superintendent, Donald Chambers for their help in hosting these very important events which will give residents the opportunity to get rid of waste tires without the typical $15 fee.”
