Senator Ritchie was joined at a Capitol news conference by other members of the committee, as well as leaders of the New York Farm Bureau to announce a plan to strengthen the state’s $5.2 billion agriculture industry by expanding markets for New York-grown products, improving the bottom lines of family farms, and investing in the future of farming.

“Agriculture is New York’s leading industry, and Senate Republicans have been at the forefront of efforts to bolster agriculture and help farmers grow,” Senator Ritchie (R-C, Heuvelton) said. “Over the past two years, we have worked to restore budget cuts to vital marketing, research, and educational programs farmers depend on to strengthen their bottom line. ‘Grown in New York’ is the Senate Republican plan to build on that success and help farmers grow and build for the future.”

RITCHIE ANNOUNCES 2013 FAMILY TAX RELIEF ACT

Senate Republican Plan Will Expand Tax Breaks, Restore STAR Rebates

State Senator Patty Ritchie is announcing a package of tax relief and reform measures aimed at providing a major economic boost to New York State’s middle class families.

Announced Monday, the 2013 Family Tax Relief Act would increase tax breaks for the middle class that have not kept pace with inflation, and in some instances, haven’t been adjusted for more than 25 years.  In addition, the act would restore STAR rebates that were eliminated in 2009.

State Senator Patty Ritchie joined students at Carthage Elementary Friday, to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. 

During the event, which capped off “National Read Across America Week,” Senator Ritchie read the book “The Cat in the Hat” to students.

Senator Ritchie Addresses Gun Rights Rally

Senator Ritchie addressed the crowd of 10,000 participants in Thursday's 2nd Amendment Gun Rights Rally held at the State Capitol. Attendees included hundreds from Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties.

CHANCELLOR UPDATES ON SUNY COLLEGE INDEPENDENCE

State University Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, questioned by Senator Patty Ritchie during today's Higher Education budget hearing, provides an update on the shared services--and shared presidents--initiative at the Canton and Potsdam campuses.

Senator Ritchie has been challenging SUNY's central admionistration to find operational savings in other ways than to eliminate the college presidencies, arguing that the campuses need independent leadership.

Earlier, SUNY committed to an announcement a leadership search sometime this year, and Chancellor Zimpher says more information will be forthcoming athe the SUNY Board's March meeting, which is currently scheduled for March 18 and 19, at the SUNY Purchase campus.

RITCHIE REMINDS PROPERTY OWNERS STAR DEADLINE IS NEAR

New York State School Tax Relief Program Deadline is March 1st

State Senator Patty Ritchie is reminding homeowners in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties that the deadline for New York State’s School Tax Relief Program—or STAR—is March 1, 2013.

STAR is a tax relief program that lowers property taxes for owner-occupied primary residences.  There are two types of benefits, Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR.

Agriculture Budget Hearing

Senator Patty Ritchie, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, quizzes First Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Jim Bays on the Governor's Executive Budget proposal, including funding for critical research, education and marketing programs.

Senator Ritchie highlighted the need for funding for apple farmers devastated by recent hurricanes,  a proposal to cut funding to the Farm Viability Institute, and property tax relief for farmers.

The hearing took place on Monday, Feb. 4th, and is one of the first steps to enacting an on-time budget before the April 1 deadline.
