Sen. Espada Joined By More Than 35 Bronx Clergy and Community Leaders to Announce Major Haiti Relief Effort

New York State Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada, Jr., along with Bishop Fernando Rodriguez, president of the Latin American Chaplains Association, an international not-for-profit organization of clergy headquartered in the Bronx, were joined today by more than 35 of the borough’s clergy and community leaders to announce a major relief effort for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Sen. Espada Led Bronx MLK March for Peace to End Gun and Youth Violence

In tribute to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., New York State Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada, Jr. was joined by clergy representing all religions, students of schools and members of athletic teams throughout the Bronx, and borough community leaders and residents in a massive “MLK March for Peace to End Gun and Youth Violence.” Before the parade, with pledge cards in hand, Sen. Espada asked the borough’s youth to sign on to an anti-gun/gang pledge to help end violence and hate/bias crimes among young people in the Bronx.

Alleged Police Brutality

I saw the video of Jonathan Baez crying out, helpless in handcuffs, his head smashed repeatedly into the pavement by someone who swore to protect us.

I applaud Commissioner Kelly’s swift decision to suspend those two officers without pay and to launch a full investigation, including looking at the supervising officers. I have always supported the police force, and will continue to do so. We need them in the Bronx.

But we don’t need them behaving like this. And let me be clear - most of them don’t. But we can’t have even one officer behave like this.

Zero-Tolerance of Violence

      As a man who deeply loves and respects my wife of over 30 years and as a grandfather with ten grandchildren, I have worked hard to build a world free of violence, a world that respects women and protects our most vulnerable populations. I have fought hate crimes in my district, provided help to victims of violent crimes, sponsored last month's March for Peace Against Gun and Youth Violence, and proposed legislation to classify violence against women as hate crimes (S.2788).
