Espada Announces Plans at Senate Hearing for Major Education Campaign and Joint Task Force to Stop Unsafe and Illegal Practice of Carving Up Apartments with Drywall Partition

Representatives of city agencies, firefighters’ unions, and tenant, landlord and housing advocacy organizations, including New York City Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri, today painted a frightening picture of the unsafe and illegal practice of partitioning apartments with drywall in buildings and private homes throughout the five boroughs. Their testimony on the issue came at a public hearing held by the New York State Senate Committee on Housing.

Amidst the Sinking Economy, Wine and Liquor Retailers Could Benefit from Proposed Legislation

State Senator Pedro Espada, Jr. (D-Bronx) has introduced a bill that would amend the alcoholic beverage control law to allow liquor stores to sell peanuts, cheese, crackers, olives and other snacks, condiments and food items associated with the consumption of wine and other alcoholic beverages.

Espada said the bill could boost sales revenue for liquor stores and sales tax for the State.

State Senate Delegation Lobbies Capitol Hill; Espada Proposes: • Federalization of 20,000 NYCHA Operated Apartments • Half-Billion Dollar Allocation in Economic Stimulus Plan for Affordable Housing Initiative in New York

Bronx State Senator Pedro Espada, who serves as Senate Vice President for Urban Policy and Planning and Chairman of the Housing Committee, today outlined a plan that he proposed yesterday to the Obama Administration and congressional leaders on Capitol Hill that calls for:

• the federalization of 20,000 New York City Housing Authority operated apartment units, and

• a half-billion dollar infusion for New York in the congressional stimulus package that would be earmarked for affordable housing in parts of the state where it is needed most.
